I'm considering taking one of the intensive instrument rating courses,
most of which have a prerequisite of having completed the knowledge exam.
Accordingly, I've been working on that on my own.

Is there a CFII around who is willing to give me an endorsement to take
the test, preferably just on my word that I've done an adequate job of
preparation and will not disgrace you? I'm near ADS, but can meet anyplace
in the area.

As to which school, on paper, Shelbe's in Arizona seems to be the best deal,
but I've no inside knowledge of their operation. Can anyone say anything about
them, pro or con?

If anyone wants to propose a local course, I'm listening, but please don't
just say "go to Monarch" or something equally uninformative. I'm already
quite familiar with the local schools.

You can get lots of opinions on Shelbe's if you go to www.ilsapproach.com
and ask in the forum. That school has been mentioned several times in the
past.

Did you use something like the King course. I know they will sign you off.

RM,

Why don't you try a one man show? There are plenty of them around, and they
are usually the better of the instructors for these intensive schools. I
did it that way. I signed up to go to Fort Atkinson, WI to get personal
training from Norm Wolfe, a Naval Flight Instructor who's had plenty of time
in airlines and GA, too. He has the simulators at his house and has the
whole course planned out in his area. Norm is a great guy, too. I don't
mean to make this sound like an ad or anything, but I did receive some
outstanding instrument training from him. Anyone interested can email me
privately for his contact information.

I don't know that I agree with that. As a CFI and AGI I think the
endorsement for the exam is outdated and meaningless. Taking an exam
before you are ready doesn't harm anyone but the student themself. The
FAA no longer pays for the tests (you do). In truth, the only reason I
even bother asking a few questions to students asking for the
endorsement is to save them the $80 if they aren't. After commercial,
no other knowledge exams require any endorsement.

BTW: For those that have been out of the training world for awhile,
you no longer need to sign that you've given any knowledge training.
You now only need to sign that you've reviewed the study material the
student used. See AC-61-65D for information concerning endorsements.

I needed an endorsement for mine. The only written I am aware of you can
take without an endorsement is the ATP exam.

You don't need an endorsement for any of the CFI writtens - 14 CFR 61.183
makes no mention of an endorsment for any knowledge test. The only
endorsement mentioned is related to FOI and that's only needed prior to the
practical.

True, and if you say you are interested in a CGI certificate you don't
even need an endorsement for the FOI. In fact, none of the testing
centers here require an endorsement for the FOI because that is such a
huge hole.
