View Full Version : What do YOU want for Xmas?

Jay Honeck
December 16th 05, 12:36 AM
As usual, that's the question I'm hearing from relatives. Also as usual, I
have no friggin' clue what to tell them -- I need nothing.

Therefore, it's time to open the topic up to the opinions of this newsgroup.
What do *you* want for Xmas this year? What's the latest, greatest,
coolest, must-have aviation thing that I should want under my tree this
year?

I'll list a few things that I'm not likely to receive, just to get the ball
rolling:

1. XM weather for my Lowrance 2000c (According to Lowrance, this is
supposedly "in the works" and "to be ready to roll out at Sun N Fun '06")

2. A new faceplate for my Narco CP-136M audio panel (yes, I'm STILL looking
for one...)

3. A DVD recorder that will let me quickly and easily transfer 15 years of
home movies onto DVD....

Can you add to the list? What do *you* want for Christmas?

An airplane. Any airplane ... well, anything but a low-wing ... unless
it is a Bo! :-)

One gizmo that our eldest daughter and her husband gave me a while back is a
LED head-band flashlight, which is very comfortable to wear under the
headset. Should the lighting fail at night, it provides excellent
illumination on the panel. It is also a very convenient hands-free light
for refueling our C172 in the dark. Highly recommended.

Happy Holidays!

My mom said she knew just what to get me when I was ten. So I suggested
that she pick out something I would have loved at age ten, give it to a
toy drive and send me a card with a note telling me what it was and why
she picked it out for "me".

Of course she's my mom, so she'll do that AND send me something. But at
least I'm off the hook for making a list!

Wow!

And all I wished for was a (turbo normalized) Cessna 206.

However I'll settle for 40 hours in a rental C-172.

TEHRAN, Iran (Reuters) -- Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has
expressed doubt that the Holocaust occurred and suggested Israel
be moved to Europe.

His comments, reported by Iran's official IRNA news agency from a

The way I see it, Helio Stallion is a good choice because it is
suitable for about any mission I would expect to fly. But I'm a
little concerned about the weight of the 223 U.S. Gallons of fuel it
burns at 280 pounds/hour. That's 1,680 lbs (7.5 hours @ ~$140/hr)
that reduces over half the useful load, but with full fuel, the
payload is still 1,320 lbs. That's probably enough payload load for
about anything I'd want to do.

Being a conventional gear aircraft, it could operate from unpaved
fields without chewing up the propeller too badly. It would be fun to
drop in on main street in some of the old ghost towns out west. And
the 320 foot takeoff distance would permit me to operate in and out of
my cousin's Mojave ranch.

It would also be useful for my interest in paleontology. The hatch in
the floor would enable me to seriously consider aerial photography.
And the 175 knot cruise speed would speed up my cross country travel
by 40% - 50%. I wander what the insurance premium would be. If the
real estate market doesn't collapse, who knows ...

>And all I wished for was a (turbo normalized) Cessna 206.

That's a nice ship too, and probably a lot cheaper to operate.

>However I'll settle for 40 hours in a rental C-172.

That would be a useful gift too.

You know what Mick Jagger said, "You can't always get what you want,
but if you try, sometimes you can get what you need." I'm tryin'.

A nice VFR weekend, preferably THIS weekend, so I don't have to worry about
icing. Have you seen the forecast? It's no longer expected to improve as
fast as I'd hoped. This late fall flying season truly truly sucks.

I'd ask for a "warm" weekend but that would be pushing it, I'd just settle
for a nice sunny VFR weekend for some great cross country flying to see
friends.

Beyond that, I've already submitted my list of little items to Santa....
mostly tools that for some reason I"ve never got around to buying for myself
but kick myself every time I need them.

I'd buy myself one of the XM weather "boxes" if I could get somebody to pay
the subscription each year.... THAT would truly be a XM(mas) present!!! :)

Well, with our kids I don't mind. However, I proposed holding that kind of

You're a good American, Jay. Remember the current Christmas
celebration with all the gift-giving was invented in the 1930's as a way
to start the country climbing out of the Great Depression.

In colonial days the idea of decorations and gifts would have been a
sacrilege.

Well, enjoy it the way YOU (and family) want to and don't let anyone shove
their notions on you.

This year my family is going to meet all the in-laws at Grandma's
(Scottsdale, AZ) and the guest of honor will be my son, Michael, home for
his first Christmas with family since going active duty with the Navy in
2002.

Make the most of every year. This is likely going to be Grandma's last one
with us.

Like the old adage: Do it YOUR way!!

Nothing except the following items?

Is this official? I have been holding up upgrading to the 2000c
awaiting XM weather capability. Appoach plates display will be another
nice item to have.

> 2. A new faceplate for my Narco CP-136M audio panel (yes, I'm STILL looking

If the faceplate is plastic, you can repair it yourself. We
repaired all the interior cracks in our Cardinal with ABS plastic
(Royalite is ABS plastic) and cement then spray-painted with SEM vinyl
paint. The panels looked almost like new (one has to look real hard to
find the repaired area).

> 3. A DVD recorder that will let me quickly and easily transfer 15 years of

You must have flying movies to include this item in your
aviation-related wish list ;-)
The DVD recorder is easy to operate but extremely limited. I
transferred all old home movies and tapes to DVD using a video capture
card (for something like $20 with nice video editing software - just
got another card for another pc for free after rebate). The software
allows me to mix slide show with movies with editing, music addition
etc. or just straight converting avi, mpeg files to DVD file format.
For the last two years, I have been sending these DVDs as Christmas
presents showing both old and new movies and pictures which are greatly
enjoyed by recipients.

A must for any pilot who flies at night IMO.

My parents ran away from home again this year to Phoenix. My brother and his

Yeah, that's what I tried last time. Trouble is, the screws come through
from the *sides* of the audio panel, meaning that they are necessarily too
small for the job, and the plastic that they must go through is too thin.

Worse, one side (where the screws go through) of the faceplate is completely
gone, after breaking numerous times. I have replaced this entire missing
side by building up successive layers of JB Weld (a 2-part epoxy-like
product that is drillable, sandable, and just about indestructible) and then
carving/cutting it to the proper dimensions with a Dremel tool. It was
painstaking work.

It lasted six months or so, until it got cold. The push-buttons for the
audio panel are slightly smaller than the tip of your index finger, which
means when you push them in turbulence, you tend to jam the plastic
faceplate, too. This, of course, puts stress on those four little side
screws, which is what broke the thing in the first place. Add cold
weather, and *pink!* -- it breaks pretty easily.

It's a dumb design, and Narco (incredibly) wants $200 just for the
faceplate!

Been down this road. It's got the marker beacons (itsy bitsy colored
lenses) in the faceplate. Pretty tough to machine those.

Somebody here offered to try and make me one, but I lost track of them... I
don't think it would be possible, sadly...

You are having a problem with different coefficients of expansion.

I don't know exactly how the face mounts, so this suggestion may not be
exactly right. You need to fix it again, the enlarge the mounting holes and
not tighten them up so tight, so when the metal of the radio vs the plastic
gets cold, the can shrink how much they want to, without putting pressure on
the faceplate.

Jay-I found a DVD recorder that accepts all kinds of inputs at best buy
for $99.00. Records up to 6 hours on a DVD.

As for what I want, I know I'm getting something from sportys. I know
because saw the packages, and I made sure I circled the video's and

now, getting something for my WIFE is a problem. She's too busy being

She's back in school? Then get her a gift certificate someplace where
she needs supplies, books, whatever for school.

On the other hand, a small token of bling, e.g. simple necklace
(does she prefer gold or platinum?) will usually be appropriate.

Or if she's really busy with school, a "gift cert" for a day at
a local spa for relaxation (massage, facial, lunch, etc).

And you better get her the foot pedal, too.

I might try laying in a few strands (if I ever try this again), just to see
if it helps. Maybe I'll try embedding a couple of reinforcing strands

Maybe this is the reason why the patched area cracked again. We put
a layer of fiberglass fabric soaked with ABS cement on all cracked area
big a small then either add more ABS cement or a small piece of thin
ABS on top depending on the size of the cracks. Both the fiberglass
cloth and ABS cement were quite cheap ($5 or less - we got the cloth at
automotive store and ABS cement at Lowe). Cracks tend to occur at
high stress areas (screw holes etc.). The fiberglass is quite
essential to prevent future cracks.

Fine , light weight fiberglass cloth,-- ask for fiberglass

I use CA glue to layer the cloth in place after roughing the
surface...

Dave,
CA glue works but not as good as ABS cement. It appeared that
previous owner(s) had used CA glue to patch some ABS plastic cracks in
our plane. In some areas, the old CA glue cracked (probably due to
thermal expansion mismatch with ABS which eventually caused fatigue
cracking). Patching ABS plastic with ABS material eliminates this
problem. Areas with thick globs of CA glue did not crack but turned
brownish yellow and looked pretty ugly. If only a small amount is
needed, one can make ABS cement by dissolving small ABS shavings in
MEK. For bigger repair job, the premade ABS cement can is the way to
go.

I think they don't. The clip was made of many short takes, and the bird
appeard to have no real directional control. On-off, a (fixed for
flight) tail setting, and the wind. When the bird is pointed right, you
flap. Otherwise you glide and wait.

Though that's an expensive way to handle RC. I lost a lot of model
rockets that way.

We (husband/wife) buy a man gift and a woman gift and then draw numbers
for order of selection. When its your turn, you can choose an unselected
item or choose to steal a previously selected item. The person who has
an item stolen can immediately steal something else or choose an
unselected item but can't choose the item stolen from them...

Makes it more interesting and fun for everyone. We put a $25 spending
limit per item and they can be something useful or a gag gift...

Google "White Elephant" you'll probably turn something up about this...
