NTSB Identification: ANC06LA032
Nonscheduled 14 CFR Part 135: Air Taxi & Commuter
Accident occurred Wednesday, March 01, 2006 in Beluga, AK
Aircraft: Douglas DC-3, registration: N777YA
Injuries: 1 Uninjured.

On March 1, 2006, about 1730 Alaska standard time, a Douglas DC-3
airplane, N777YA, sustained substantial damage during an in-flight
collision with trees on final approach to the Beluga Airport, Beluga,
Alaska.

......

During a telephone conversation with the NTSB IIC on March 3, a
representative of the operator said the pilot reported striking
trees at the approach end of the runway during landing. She said
the airplane landed without incident, and the pilot subsequently
flew the airplane to Anchorage.

Well, that is one way to keep the trees trimmed along the approach path...

And then flew back to Anchorage, eh? I wonder if anyone has any pictures...

It's a DC3.... a few trees aren't going to hurt it.

If you can find it, there was a book written in the late 50's or early
60's called Grand Old Lady, Story of the DC-3 that has a lot of stories
of DC-3 "adventures" such as this.

I read such a book. It talked about 100+mph blizzards in the Aleutians
and taking off backwards in same. But the one that really stuck was
the Berlin Airlift Gooney carrying a full load of N sheets of
Perforated Aluminum Planking, for extending the runway in Berlin.

Pilot had a hell of time taxiing out, and barely got off the ground.
After a really hard landing and taxi; they discovered they had
been given N sheets of Perforated *Steel* Planking...
