Aviation Consumers in their review said that CNX-80 could be certified with its
built-in CDI. Is it true?

If it is true, does its built-in CDI provide G/S or VNAV indication?

The CDI provides cross track error. (XTE)

I'm not sure about the CDI, but you can use its builtin annunciator if it's
close enough to the other instruments. IIRC the edge of the unit needs to
be within 11" of the center of the yoke.

According to my reading of the installation manual, it can be installed
that way for a VFR only installation. The installation must then be
placarded "GPS LIMITED TO VFR USE ONLY" in clear view of the pilot.

No, it does not.

You can download the installation documentation from Garmin's web site.

My reading of the install manual indicates that an external CDI/HSI and GS
are required for IFR operations. No external annunciators are required
depending on the exact position of the unit, as you mentioned.

Yes, that's what CDIs do, by design.
But that's irrelevant to Robin's questions.
See Ron Rosenfeld's answers for the useful information.

No, that's what PDIs do, by design.
