View Full Version : The Bose-Killer

And now David-Clark unveils it's "Bose-Killer". The X11 headset. Cell and
music input, light weight and folds up nice and neat for storage. 799.00.
Marketing really screwed up there. Only 799.00...must be just ok. Should
have made them 995.00 and let our imaginations go crazy at wondering what
magical technology must be installed to justify the price. I bet the "X" in
the name is no coincidence either.

Hmmmm... shipping late July? Why, that means they will be introduced at
AirVenture '06!!! It's a stroke of marketing genius! I'll bet there will
be some special pricing.

Don't you just love competition? This is excellent news in the headset
arena.
Hopefully Bose drops their price and includes a cell/audio input in their
next generation of their headset.

While that would be really nice, what effect did the previous "Bose
Killers" have?

Which were what headsets?

I've heard the "BK" term used for every other brand of cheaper ANR set
out there upon mass-market release.

You're kidding, right?
This is the kind of headset Lightspeed, Sennheiser, Telex, Pilot
Avionics and all the other introduced years if not decades ago. At
lower prices. Some at MUCH lower prices.

Tell me how that DC is different from the Sennheiser HMEC 400 (?), the
Telex Stratus, the Lightspeed Thirty 3G, the Pilot Avionics "whatever
model number" and all those others? Tell me why it is more expensive
than all these while offering exactly the same?

Well, don't buy them. You obviously own the perfect headset already.

#1 -- It's not all cheap plastic;
#2 -- Company doesn't have a reputation for "great customer service"
because their headsets fall apart or have electrical problems;
#3 -- Is one heck of a lot smaller (low profile) and probably lighter;
#4 -- Folds for compact storage or transport.
There's probably a good #5 in somewhere, but I have to say: If I were
going to spend $800 on the DC X11, I think I'd just kick in another $200
and get the Bose. If I'm not willing to shell out $1k for the Bose, I'm
probably not going to shell out $800 for the DC X11, either. I'm not so
sure that the price point is a good one.

So what advantage does the Bose have over these and the new DC?

Jonathan,

Like which of the ones I mention? Each contains a lot of metal in the
right places. And who says plastic is automatically bad?

We've been through that.

Than?

Some of the ones I mention do that.

It's a Bose ;-) Not sure, I don't own one.
It's simply that my BS detector goes through the roof when DC brings
out a headset with this feature set in the year 2006 (!) and someone
claims it is somehow new, innovative, sensational or a "Bose killer".

DC is pretty much the leader in aviation headsets, and for good reason.
Contrary to your opinion, the reality is that they make a great product
at a fair price and--in the rare case you may need customer
service--they stand behind their product, often exceeding expectations.
Unfortunately, I don't see the DC X11 as a "Bose-killer." Maybe if it
were at the $500 price point, it would be a "Bose-killer" if the
performance and comfort were as claimed.

Specifically, Lightspeed, who seems to have captured the ANR headset
market.

Most of the competing ANR headsets on the market.

I suggest you look at them again. There's metal in that band...

Bah, humbug. Look at Lightspeed's QFR series, the Sennheisers, the Pilot
Avionics...

Can you point to a market analysis supporting that claim? I'd be really

Based on what I see people wearing my estimate is all the others combined
probably do not equal the sales of DC.

Oh, the others sell more, it's just that their stuff breaks so quickly
that you only *see* people wearing DC. :-)

That's not quite the way statistics work ;-)
Based on what I see, it's a wild mix. That's why I was asking.

They have also made space suits for many NASA missions.

That's great.
Their aviation headsets are still '70s relics.

Shuttle and space station suits are made in three sizes, tops and
bottoms.

How about going to affordable - so you can get one for your spouse as well.
(Try: "OK for me to spend 1 AMU on a headset but I can't afford the same for
you!") Buy the DRE-6000, $292.95 from Aircraft Spruce (part number
11-00543). Includes carry bag and ship's power plug. Also runs on two 9V
batteries for ~50 hours. Excellent sound quality on both radio and
intercom. I just ordered a second unit for my wife after she tried it in
the air yesterday.
