View Full Version : Cananian airspace

What type of airspace is the restricted airspace north of Vancouver Island.
Flightmap lists it as COMOX and says that it reaches from 18,000MSL to
Unlimited. It is big, about 165nm on the NS axis and 110nm EW. What are my
chances at getting cleared through it at FL240?

Thanks!

What's the designation?

Flightmap shows no information except the name "Comox" the altitudes
"18,000/Unlimited" and that "Comox Terminal Control" is the controlling
agency.

More than likely something to do with CFB Comox

I dunno your chances of getting through though I'd speculate they're
pretty good.

That would be CFB Comox, i.e. a military base.

Ah yes, area " Nighthawk", reserved for (then) CF-101 Voodoos doing
intercept training. When not using the area, it was given back to
Vancouver center (?) and airliners did indeed use it. The voodoos
left in 1984, replaced for at least a short time by CF 18s. I don't
know if there are still CF 18s at Comox.
Simplest is to call the base at Comox, 250-339-8231 ask for ATC, and
ask them for what's likely to happen reference this area. Failing
that, try Vancouver center, 604-775-9601
Good luck on your trip to Alaska

I don't have my Vancouver Map handy but that should be the
military control zone (Class D) for CFB Comox. Very low military
traffic and a great bunch in their ATC facility. Should be no
problem but you can always check with them first while flight
planning. If you enter through Victoria you can verify with the
local FBO as to current local procedures. Haven't flown there
lately but lots of friends out there and they have no problems.

I think all the CF-18s in Canada are back in Trenton. And at least 2/3rds
of them are in a warehouse in Trenton.

Oh, I'm wrong - the flying ones are in Bagotville and Cold Lake. But none
are in Comox, and that's the germaine part to this discussion.

Some days violence is just a nice quick solution to a problem that
would need thought, planning and actual work to do justice to.

Actually we send some CF-18s to fly out of Comox quite regularly,
though none are stationed there. They don't advertise that
information anywhere so you really have to check with ATC when
you are in the area to see what is going on. It shouldn't
represent any problem as long as you remember to ask first!

Negative. I am in the Canadian military (Air Force) and Comox is
most definitely NOT a fighter base. It does on occasion host
CF-18s in limited numbers.

I thought CFB Comox is the home of 442 Squadron "Search and rescue". To my
understanding CF-18's are there only occasionaly when visiting out of CFB
Cold Lake Alberta.

You are part correct. We have a Maritime Patrol squadron and a
Search and Rescue squadron based at Comox. Occasionally CF-18s
from Cold Lake fly out of Comox. Use the link to learn more about
Comox. It is the official military site available on the
internet.

I guess that I am lucky then, I was cleared through direct both ways and
there were military aircraft using the airspace.
