Piper Lance pros/cons?

Hi!

I just started looking at the Piper Lance.
It looks nice performance wise (both Turbo and non turbo model) and it looks
like a more natural next step for someone like me owning an old Arrow with
the retracts than the Cherokee 6's.

Anyone got any pros or cons regarding this model?

How does the weight loading add up?
Can you carry fuel for any range with 6 adults in it?

What are the major advantages to this compared to the 6? Major
disadvantages?
Not the abvious has retract=more expensive to insure....

I like having a retract, so I'd actually rather continue with that.
Any reason why there are so few of these compared to other Pipers on the
used market? Produced a limited time? Reason for this?

Thanks for any input, and I'd love to come in contact with any Lance owners
for some discussions.

membership would be an excellent investment. If you end up with the
Lance, It may be the best investment you could make!

The 'T' tailed ones supposedly did funny things with power changes - tails is not in prop slipstream. We had an old one
that flew just like the '6' except for the retracts adding another item to the checklist...

Love it. Even though my club charges a $25/month surcharge to be a Lance
pilot, and it costs $25/hr more than the Dakota, it's worth it.

If you can fit it in, it will fly. (Note: Probably not true if you're
loading gold bricks or bags of cocaine.) Ours has a BEW of 2140.6, and
a MGTOW of 3600.

Depends on the adults. With me, my wife and four teenagers (of various
weights), I can carry about 70 gallons.

Not familar with the 6.

I love the room - put me and my wife in a PA23 and we're rubbing
shoulders, but in the PA32 there is room for charts and stuff between the
seats. I also like the fact that I don't have to tell them to pack light.

My wife also loves the "big airplane feel" - she says it feels more stable
than an Archer.

It's also the only plane in our fleet with an HSI so that's another reason
why I like flying it, but that's not relevant to a comparison of types.

Hi Frode,

We bought a '78 turbo T-tail 2 years ago. I had some time in the
non-turbo T-tail several years before, so flying the T is normal to me
-- never had any problems with handling. I fly out of a 2100 foot strip
(http://www.airnav.com/airport/L18).

With six 170 pound adults on board, I could only carry about 43 gallons
in our Lance. But that is still enough fuel to go just about anywhere
we would want to go in Southern California, with reserves. For an
occasional flight with 6 adults, this is fine. If you routinely want to
fly 6 adults on longer cross country flights with luggage, then you may
want to consider something else.

As a family of 4, with a petite wife and 2 kids in the 9/10 age range,
this airplane gives us lots of flexibility. The four of us plus grandma
and grandpa and bags for a 3 day weekend works out just fine.

I put together a simple Excel spreadsheet that lets me plug in numbers
for various passenger(we have club seating) and baggage loads to see how
much fuel I can carry . You are welcome to play around with it to see
how the airplane would fit your needs. I've just put up a REALLY basic
web page that has the spreadsheet and some photos of our Lance at

One of these days I'll put up some better organized info and pictures.

I've never flown the Cherokee 6, so I can't give you any objective
comparsion info. In the Lance you are limited to 100 pounds in the
front baggage compartment and 100 pounds in the rear baggage area.

Cherokee Six: 200 pounds each, front and rear baggage compartments.

Same with my Six. The limit has never been a problem with the front
baggage compartment, as it isn't big enough to get over 100lbs of the
kind of stuff you normally have in luggage in it. The Six is just
a fixed gear Lance with 200lbs less MGTOW, which is offset by the extra
200 lbs in the Lance's BEW for the retracts.

"Cherokee Chat" -- an on-line group of Cherokee Pilots Association
owners -- is worth its weight in gold to us. You can find an answer
to ANYTHING there.

At the other end of the spectrum, the magazine that comes with
membership is so amateurish and puny as to be laughable -- but that
chat room is worth every dime Terry Lee Rogers charges.

That's rubbish. Unless you call flying stable and smooth "funny". It's
because the tail is not in the slipstream that it isn't effected by power
changes, gear and flaps.

I think it flies just like an Arrow except slightly longer and more
sensitive to CG changes.

Also, remember there is a T-tail and non-T-Tail verson of the Lance.

There is also one for sale in North Carolina that I know of if you're on the
east coast.
