I have a hard time imaging a pilot would want to fly a homemade GPS
approach.

That's all Capt. Jeppesen had.

I don't know why...I've flown homemade approaches all over the third
world using equipment far less accurate than GPS(Omega and INS) in big
jets. Sure as hell beat some of their ADFs in a thunderstorm.

Having never been forced into that corner -- before GPS came on the
scene -- I have to admit I once felt the same way Bob. After having been
there -- again before GPS came of age -- I have to agree with Bob Moore.
Homemade approaches can sometimes save your butt, but they can also get
you hurt.
I'm not advocating a non-pub'd approach by any means, but then I don't
advocate that people collect on their life insurance policies either.

With moving map, I'm sure!

I guess it depends on the situation. I've certainly done a few homemade
approaches in Mexico. However, that is in class G IFR where I don't
have to worry about running into someone's airspace. Baja is very easy
because you just put yourself off the coast, descend over the ocean
(which is pretty flat) and turn inbound.

BTW: Even in controlled airspace, Mexican controllers will not issue an
IFR clearance w/o asking you if you are instrument rated. Not sure what
purpose that serves though. I've gotten many IFR enroutes from Tijuana
control.
