For two years I have chased the cause of the famous Cherokee
Fluctuating Ammeter. Somewhere in here it became obvious that the
problem was load related, ie turning off loads cured the problem for a
time. This resulted in changing switches, loads and curses. It should
have become obvious somewhere in here that the alternator might be
have a part in the problem but I guess I am not that smart, I kept
chasing bad switches and loose connections. Finally at annual my AP
scrapped my 4 year old alternator. Wahoo!. Leo

You haven't fixed it. It'll be back.

You are all heart. It has been 4 months now and the ampmeter has been
as steady as a drunks alabi. Surely anything as expensive as an
alternator will fix a bouncing ampmeter. Leo
