I just got hold of an excel spreadsheet from someone, but I don't have
excel. Is there any other program I can get (free) that will open an excel
spread sheat? It's very important that I see this.

There's a range of options ----

Email it to someone to convert to something else

Download an Excel viewer from M$

Track down an alternate package that opens Excel files. I had one that
came with a 'PC User' disk

Go to this site:

http://www.openoffice.org/

and download the Open Office suite. It is a free replacement for MS
office and includes spreadsheets.

I have used it with my Linux system for years. Thee are NO
compatibility issues with MS files.

There is a Windows version which I installed on my college student kids'
laptops, rather than pay for the MS office suite.

Consider switching to Fedora or Ubuntu Linux as a complete break from MS.

regards,

Dave

Open Office is a suite of programs that are quite similar to the MS Office
suite and they are available for a range of platforms. Generally, they are
quite compatible with the equivalent MS product unless you are using very
involved macros.

Thanks Hugh,

I tend to use formulae a lot, I'll definitely give it a try. MS
Office gets chubbier with each new release.

I just hope the hackers don't start to concentrate on Open Office like they
do with MS.

just loaded it and looked at it, haven't had time to do much. Have heard
that Math is smarter then XL, can do a sort of a multi-column data set
based on one column.
