View Full Version : Garmin 396 Reception Improves

I did have the GA-25 antenna all the while I had intermittent lost sat
reception. Bought a new high-gain replacement on line and did the swap
last weekend. For 2 days prior to the swap, I would lose reception
completely on a S-SE heading. The new antenna shows 10 sats 3/4 way up
or better. Also, the sats are now solid and not "dancing around" as they
were with the stock GA-25. I had done a side by side swap test a couple
of weeks ago and saw pretty dramatic improvement, but could not get the
original to lose it completely until this weekend.

As someone mentioned, there may have been a recognized problem with
these stock units. I need to take a few more flights before declaring
victory.

I'll see if Garmin is game to swapping the original unit out for the GA-26.

Good luck,
Mike

Not "may have been," Mike: there *is* a recognized problem with these stock
units. I told you about it a month ago, remember?

They will.

Yes, I remember your report. However, I generally qualify statements on
the 'Net because we have a segment of the population who just LIVES to
argue whenever someone makes an absolute statement. Also, I don't
personally know most of the folks here and I won't take their word as
gospel. So, "may have been" is the best you will get out of me until I
see it with my own eyes. Then I will likely progress to "in my
experience". Nobody has shown me a url at Garmin where they admit these
units are defective. Till then... "may"

You are suspicious to the point of debility. I wasn't trying to sell you
something.

You might have been rid of this problem weeks ago with a simple phone call.

You told him that, I told him that (multiple times), other people told
him that, but some folks have to suffer the pain and learn on their own.

Even with the GA26C, I've heard of folks having sporadic problems. I do
not have problems in my airplane with my radios, but I suspect that in
some cases, comm radios may still create a problem for some folks. I
believe that the KX155 in particular can cause problems, as can certain
other radios.

Makes you wonder why he even bothers with usenet.

Since changing to the GA26C I've had no further reception problems, and my
NAV/COM 1 is a KX155.

Fingers crossed,

I believe that there is a filter that's supposed to be installed on
older KX155 units during installation of a panel-mount GPS. I don't
recall the source of that information off-hand, but I remember reading
about it during my recent research into replacing my KX170B. I elected
to get the KX170B fixed for now, though I will probably replace one of
them with a 430W in the near future.
