AFA cadets head to hills for test of survival skills

COLORADO SPRINGS - The early morning sun was already hot Monday when
1,255 freshman cadets marched out of the Air Force Academy and into
the nearby foothills on their second big step toward becoming military
officers.

To the cadence of a big bass drum, the long column of cadet "basics"
kept step, marching in green camouflage fatigues, yellow ball caps and
shiny boots.

They won't be shiny for long.

For the next three weeks, the cadets will climb and crawl, run and
jump, grunt a...
