Hi !

I just saw a picture of a C-130 Hercules on the deck of a Carrier !!
The picture seems to be from around the 70s, no other planes else on deck.
No other description was provided, it was on an image board ...

Is this a nice fake or was this ever possible ?

ThanX in advance,
Jan

if the C-130 could answer for itself, it would say, Been There, Done That

Surely that Herc would have needed JATO to get off that carrier .
Speaking of which do Hercs (with the exception of fat albert) still
use JATOS Four turning and Eight burning ?

Not only did it not require JATO for takeoff, it took off from its
stopping point on the landing.

40 knots of wind over the deck undoubtedly helped.

It actually happened-USS Forrestal (CV-59) was the carrier involved. The
idea was to test the feasiblity of using a C-130 as a COD aircraft. Landings
were made without arrester hook, and takeoffs were completely unassisted,
although there may have been a JATO launch as part of the tests. While feasible,
the idea was dropped.

No, no JATO or cat, just turn into the wind, wind 'em up, and release
brakes. Adm Flately, the pilot. later told me that he did not think
that it was such a big deal (but then he was a modest sort).
