I bought a 396 at Osh this summer and the battery never shows more
than half charge on the meter. However, if I just let it run, it runs
to its full time, so apparently the internal meter needs to be reset.
Anybody know how to do that? Yep, I did read the manual, couldn't
find anything.

Might try Garmin support. They are usually helpful.

I found that I deep cycle the battery by running the gps until it
dies, then recharge, each recharge is a little better. After 3
cycles, it's now up to about 95%. It also helped to download new
firmware from garmin.

Paul has the right idea. I know several people with the same problem.
Originally, Garmin was sending them new batteries, but that didn't help.
It's some kind of bug in the software. As you continue cycling the battery,
the display should get a little better each time.
