Search & Rescue GPS

Hi Folks,

Hope someone here can help.

We have a helicopter that we want to be able to fly very accurately
search patterns, like creeping line, expanding box etc.

I cant find a GPS on the market that supports this natively, though in
theory it wouldnt be hard to generate a GPX file with the relevant
waypoints, doing it graphically is a bit beyond my programming
knowledge.

The other problem is it would be really nice to present it graphically
to the pilot with a deviation bar or similar.

Does anyone know how this can be done?

We have KLN94 and KMD550 MFD at the mo.

You could use a program like Oziexplorer (www.oziexplorer.com) and digital
maps/charts to connect the gps for real-time plotting on a laptop or PDA.

The SAR MAP function is built into the Morrow GX50, 55, 60, and 65 units.

And with the new Cessna SB07-34-05A is now an option for any Cessna
with the G1000. "The SAR upgrade enhancement includes the following:

I didn't se the original of this; it must have had its posting widened. But
the OP might have a look at GPSU (http://www.gpsu.co.uk) which has some
search pattern generation functions and has a free trial version.

These units, usually Apollo branded, are in the majority of Civil Air Patrol
airplanes and go with the airplanes when CAP sells them. You can probably find
one fairly inexpensively, especially the VFR units, from someone who has a CAP
airplane and is upgrading the panel.
