The British, French, and Germans were planning a successor to Concorde
since 1994 with the ESRP (European Supersonic Research Program). Prior
to that there was already a "Concorde B" proposal way back in 1976.
The goal of both of these is to:

- improve range up to 5000-6000 NM
- increase speed up to Mach 2.2-2.4
- reduce fuel consumption
- reduce noise emissions
- improve aerodynamic structure of the aircraft
- extend service routes
- make SST travel more affordable

The target date for the new SST was 2010 but the bottom line is in the
research investment costs.
Interestingly, German participation has led to an independent
configuration known as the "Turbulenz". The British/French proposal is
an enlarged delta Concorde with canards and new engines. The
"Turbulenz" is a diamond-wing craft with podded engines that bears no
resemblence to Concorde.
It will be interesting to see what the final configuration will be if
the ESRP yields an operational aircraft.
