Apaches get new look
(EXCERPT) By Henry Cuningham Military editor
After the holidays, people looking up at the sky around Fort Bragg may
notice a different-looking Apache helicopter.
About half of the Apache Longbow helicopters are equipped with a fire
control radar that sits above the rotors. The system is shaped a bit
like a thick tire mounted above the blades.
The remanufactured and upgraded $36 million D model Apache Longbow is
supposed to help usher the Army into the digital age. That means
target information can be sent without using voice communication.
The two-seat, tank-killing AH-64A model came out in the early to mid
1980s and debuted in Panama.
''It was built at the end of the '70s when they designed it...
