View Full Version : Flap handle grip for LS6

The rubber pistol grip on the flap handle in my LS6 is pretty badly
deteriorated. The spoiler handle grip is also going down hill. DG
replied to an email that they can't help me with replacements.
The next step could be fabrication, but I thought I'd try the group
first. Is there a source for these handgrips? I noticed pictures of
the JS1 Revelation cockpit showed grips that look similar.
I have seen wooden replacement grips and I could carve some. But I
thought I'd try and mold some.
If you have any tips or techniques let me know. I don't know what
rubber product to use, but we've got a local rubber products vendor
with a large inventory.
Thanks

Hi Robin,

The current Type Certificate Holder for the LS4 and LS6 is AMS Flight
in Slovenia:

http://www.ams-flight.si/

They might be able to help, at least officially they would be the go
to for spare parts.

try www.mcmaster.com
they have several handle grips...cheap...or try local ski shops for old
style ski pole grips (these were used by many sailplane manufacturers in the
past)

I got a spoiler grip for my LS1f last year from Pacific Aerosport. You
can google them for the web address.

I've made several grips using the black foam tubing that used to be used on
bicycle drop bars of the old "10-speed" variety - Wal-Mart has them.

To make the closed-end grip, insert a scrap piece of wood, cardboard etc to
almost the length of the foam tube. Apply a small amount of super glue to
the end to be closed and squeeze shut. The super glue will bond almost
instantly.

Using a belt sander or grinding wheel, shape the closed end as desired. It
helps to have something rigid in the tube while doing this and keep the end
angled in the direction of abrasive movement so it doesn't grab.

Use silicone spray to ease installation if the handle is larger than the
tubing ID.

Open lengths of this foam tubing can be used to cover the stick handle as
well. Liberal application of silicone spray allows use over existing
handles. If existing handle OD is much greater than foam tube ID, then cut
foam tubing a bit too long (1/2 to 3/4 inch extra) as foam length will
shrink a bit as foam is stretched over handle.

Thanks for the responses. I see some good ideas. I did forget to
mention in my original post that the metal handles that the grips fit
over is not a round tube like a ski pole or bicycle handlebar. Rather
they are thin metal slaps. Probably I can modify a round hole to file
the slab easier than I can manufacture an entirely new grip.

I wish I knew! My (our) LS6 flaphandle is pretty shabby too.
Let us know what you find out please.

We recently replaced our stick grip ( different a/c, a Libelle ) with
close to OEM parts... a xc ski pole grip. That would probably work with the spoiler grip,
but not the flaps.

My partner replaced the flap and airbrake grips in our Kestrel which
has a flat bar as the main part also.
He simply made a couple of half rounds which he shaved down to the
shape he wanted ,one for each side of the slab, drilled 2 holes
through the
slab and half rounds and countersunk the the holes in the half rounds
and simply bolted the assembly together after checking all clearances.
After a final sand 3 coats of varnish, we had nice looking wood
handles
for our controls and we found they were easier to hold and felt
better
than plastic ones.

Hi Robin

Mr. Siegfried Piontkowsky the designer, and co constructer with Lembke,
of the LS11 produces some nice handles in carbonfiber.

He also produces winglets for the LS6a.

If you are interested I can provide you with some photes of the handles.

Best regards

Peter Meilhede
also a lucky LS6 owner:-)

Hi,
An email address please.
S6, LS6b owner.

I refinished my grip. The grip was badly deteriorated and falling
apart. It required glue, then I slipped heat shrink tubing over to
make it solid again. I refinished it with rubber spray. It looked
new when finished.

Hotel Alpha is a Std Cirrus in South Africa - presume your HA is a LS6?

I missed this thread, so sorry if I'm off the mark here. For a flap handle,
check out your local bicycle store. They have many grips that might do the
trick for you...perhaps even more ergonomic that what you now have.
