I worked the B-52Gs and Hs from 86-94 and the B-1B until 1998. I served with
the Buff out of Fairchild AFB in SAC and then in ACC, and the BONES at Dyess
AFB.
I pulled many Alert tours and Deployed with the Buff to Diego Garcia for
Desert Shield and Storm. Just want to hook up with people with a love of
heavy bombers or a dislike of the Bones...as I have. or try to convince me
that the B-1 is a great aircraft.

The Bone works now and I doubt you'll find anyone dumb enough to talk bad
about the bone, only to have you shoot them in the back, Maddux.

It seems the aircrews love the B-1 and the maintainers hate it. I worked B-1's
at Dyess in the early '90's as an E/E troop. We must have just missed each
other as I left Texas in '94.

It's too bad the Bone didn't have a good (as if any bailout situation is
good) non-ejection seat bailout capability. I took several maintainers for
flights on the Buff at Mather and, of course, they loved it. Not possible
in the Bone, but I assure you, you would have had a great time.
Most of the crew chiefs I met, Buff or Bone, loved working on their jet.
They all agreed it was harder on the Bone (those that had done both),
especially early on, but in my second tour I sat in many a morning MX brief
(I was the 28BS/DO for awhile) and the situation had improved a lot over the
decade. I understand now that there's a lot more parts available and it's
improved even more.

Yes, Baker, the bone finally works.
For maintainers, the Bone was a miserable pig, for nearly two decades.

good day sir,
naw I am over that, I still believe the bone was the worst aircraft I had
ever worked, But I can concede that it might have gotten better. I turn down
a chance twice to flight in the B-1 as command section of Dyess tried to
improve the morale of crew chiefs. most choose to do it by a good number
also refused this gift.
Good to here from you sir

I remember alot of maintainers turning down B-1 rides also. Supervision got
really upset when maintenance guys asked if they could turn in their B-1 ride
for a T-38 ride. :)

Hello Eggroll135r, Its good to hear from a 135 guy too, I suppose I should
have add the back bone of SAC tanker fleet to that. Are you still in the
service and had you severed in SAC as well as AMC.

I'm still in and at Grand Forks...There are still a few of us old "SAC trained
killers" around. I worked the B-1B's and then got transferred over to the
KC-135A's while at Dyess. I used to take a lot of ribbing from my ex-co
workers about becoming a Tanker Toad but I'd tell them I'd be thinking about
them after being released from work early. (Tankers landed Code 1 ALOT more
often than B-1's) "You enjoy your PCA op checks at 2200 on a Friday night and
I'll enjoy a nice cold beer back at the dorms..." That would get them to shut
up pretty quick! :) The other nice thing about -135's is that you usually
deploy on the aircraft that you are working on. No need to sit around waiting
for airlift.

I had work the A model tanker for 6 months at Fairchild when they had a
shortage of crew chief during one of the Roll Backs. I was offered to stay
with them, but has just come back from a vacation spot off the coast of
Alaska for an alert tour and did not want to ever go back. But I did kick
myself went after AMC took over the base and the bombers move out. I had no
choices, Dyess or Dyess. I would have take Minot to stay with the BUFFs.
I have been out for about 5 years not and just moved from Minnesota to my
wife's home state of Missouri in July 03. how's the weather up there.
