Rabbi Urges Pig Fat on Buses to Stop Bombers

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A prominent Israeli rabbi has
proposed hanging bags of pig fat in buses to deter
Muslim suicide bombers who may want to avoid contact
with an "unclean" animal, an Israeli official said on
Thursday.

The idea -- suggested by Rabbi Eliezer Fisher, a
rabbinical judge, in a letter to police -- signaled
the extremes to which some Israelis may be willing to
go to stop Palestinian bombers who have killed
hundreds of Israelis in recent years.

Judaism, like Islam, considers pigs unclean. But the
ultra-Orthodox rabbi has ruled that special
dispensation can be given for placing bags of lard in
buses and public places in an effort to prevent
attacks.

Police had no immediate comment on the proposal.

Asked about the deterrent capability of pig fat on
Israeli buses, Palestinian sources called it an
exercise in futility.

Islamic militants are told by those who send them on
bombing missions that their souls enter Paradise
instantly after they explode despite any contamination
or defilement of their bodies.

"It's not a problem if it saves lives," Israeli Deputy
Public Security Minister Yaakov Edri said, referring
to the breaking of Jewish religious law.

"I personally support it," Edri told Reuters. "If it
can deter even one suicide bomber -- then wonderful.
Security authorities must consider it."

An article on the rabbi's proposal published on the
Web site of the Israeli newspaper Maariv drew dozens
of e-mail responses from readers ranging from
incredulous to complimentary.

Why not have a central depository for the remains of suicide bombers, mixed in
with pig remains that are deemed unsuitable for human consumption? Spread the
mixture along the border for the ultimate in recycling. Suicide bombers could
be returned to their families in the form of "Lil Smokies" - perhaps that might
deter one or two of the freaks that think that killing a busload of civilians
to be a ticket to Allah.

'Lil Smokies -- most excellent idea! Or maybe Pork Rinds, which would
be even more humiliating given that Pork Rinds are George Bush Sr's
favorite snack food...

Why bother? It would stink up the buses. Better to announce that any
body parts of bombers, and there seems there are some, would be returned
wrapped in a pig skin.

By definition, a terrorist is a coward. Thus, as the Israeli rabbi
said, if a bag of lard serves to deter even *one* terrorist who may be

I'm sure that they probably have more than an ample supply of lard in Israel,
since they do raise pigs for export, even if they don't consume them. (^-^)))

Actually, some (Jewish) Israelis do eat pork, and Israeli citizens who happen
to be Christian don't even have to ignore dietary laws to do it.

When I spent a summer as a volunteer worker picking fruit on Kibbutz Revivim (in
the Negev Desert near the southern Israeli town of Beersheva), the communal dining
hall occasionally served ham. The Hebrew euphemism for pork is "basar lavan"
("white meat").

I never asked, but my guess is the ham served in the dining hall was a deliberate
flouting of Jewish law -- the kibbutzniks I met tended to be irreligious at least,
and fanatically anti-everything associated with traditional European notions of
Judaism at most.

Someone who is willing to die to achieve their goal may justly be called
many unpleasant names, but 'coward' doesn't really fit.

Unfortunately, we're stuck with dealing with these people as they are,
not as we wish they were: they may be homicidal, reckless of life and
murderous; but they are also willing, nay eager, to die to achieve their
goals.

I'm deeply unconvinced that a smear of lard will deter them where a
determined security effort (with death in failure the result of
detection) has already tried and failed.

In and of itself, "willingness" ain't enough. It is the *manner* in
which terrorists are willing to die that makes them cowards.

Truth be known, I too am unconvinced that lard would work but as the
rabbi alluded, it's one of those "whaddya' got to lose" scenarios.
