Shortly after Pearl Harbor when I was in High School our class was approached
by two.groups looking to recruit us into their services. One was the Army Air
Corps and the other was the Navy V-12. Both services took simiiar approaches.
They never tried to tell us on how good their services would be for us or how
much we would benefit if we joined them. Their appoaches were very simple and
direct. "Your country needs you. Come fight with us". Both programs led to
similiar goals. Flying. They didn't promise us a colllege education or
government benefits. They promised us nothing but the chance to fight with
them, defend our country and defeat a brutal enemy. It was more a "blood sweat
and tears" approach than a glamourous come-on. I remember those days clearly.
I went with the Army Air Corps. After the war at a reunion only two of use who
went Air corp ever came home. The other guy flew B-17's. Those were no-nonsense
days never to be forgotten.
