CNN just announced that the DoD is expected to announce this afternoon that
the Commanche project will be cancelled. If this pans out as reported, I
guess we can expect some sort of expedited effort to pick up an
off-the-shelf reconnaissance/light attack helo, or maybe a light utility
helo oriented more towards ARNG requirements; IIRC the premise behind
drawing down the AH-1 force in the ARNG, and not issuing it more AH-58D's,
was that more AH-64's and 58D's would be available when the RAH-66 began to
enter the force. Those units stuck trying to maintain proficiency in the old
OH-58C's are going to need a replacement aircraft rather quickly. Looks like
the USMC, with their AH-1Z/UH-1Y rebuild programs, had the better idea after
all.
