MORRISVILLE, N.C. -- A Navy F-18 fighter jet caught fire on the runway
of the Raleigh-Durham airport during takeoff Friday, but the pilot
ejected, authorities said.

The pilot, whose identity was not immediately released, was in good
condition at a Raleigh hospital, airport spokeswoman Teresa Damiano
said. He was the only one on board; no one on the ground was injured.

Damiano said the plane had stopped to refuel. She said the pilot
described his plane as swerving and bursting into flames as it taxied
toward a takeoff runway. The pilot ejected before the plane left the
ground - about 1,700 feet down the 7,500-foot runway, she said.

The burning plane continued rolling before coming to a stop 500 feet
from the terminal.

News video showed the plane engulfed in flames, with thick black smoke
pouring out. Airport fire crews quickly...

Anyone know what model F-18 this was? An older A/B/C/D, or one
of the newer more expensive E's or F's?

Not a two seater, at any rate. From Oceana according to local
news. Kept burning for quite a while, despite being covered heavily in
foam.

I understand that the aircraft had just been refueled according to
WRAL-TV.

That's right. It was on its takeoff roll when, according to the press reports,
it lost power and the pilot punched out. I assume that he thought that he
wasn't going to be able to get airborne and he was out of room in which to bring
it to a halt on the ground when he decided to bail out. I guess we won't
actually know what happened until after the accident investigation board
finishes its work and publishes its findings.....probably a matter of months.
