is it reasonable to assume that if presented with a choice of grit
sizes (20.40.80), that 80 would be the finest? like sandpaper

ballottini (glass beads) comes in a two letter designation.
I used AH grade after some experimentation. it worked best on the
steel tubes of the Auster.
when bead blasting an aircraft component you need to take into account
the fatigue characteristics of the resultant blasted surface. for this
reason you need round particles not sharp grit.
we have sandy soils over here in Perth. some of the most effective
bead blasting media I used was fine round particle washed quartz sand
just beside the neighbouring hangar.
use the appropriate style of grit for aviation.
