Ahhhhh. Harry Truman provided military transport to move French troops back
into what was then French Indo China (Vietnam) shortly after the Japanese
surrender -- 1945 maybe. Apparently he was blackmailed by the French. "Either
US supports France in Vietnam or France won't join NATO."

Every president since escalated that charming war. Nixon escalated it more
than any other president -- but ultimately he did get us out.
