Negotiate for orders to a new duty station for the remainder of 'obligated
service' (refer to enlistment contract).

Several ways come to mind: Administrative Discharge will not 'hurt' a
persons record and basically means you did not 'fit into the service'.
Medical Discharge is used for those folks with a medical condition that
precludes fulfillment of service contract.

And you could always change your name and move to Tahiti. Send me a postcard
please.

Under current policies, if you fail out of tech school you are likely to be
administratively discharged.

Previous policies allowed a 2nd and sometimes 3rd chance at another tech
school. But thats over now.

When I was going through basic electronics at Keesler in 1975 we had a guy
who just couldn't handle it and was literally beating his head against the
wall. He wound up in the motor pool as a "transportation specialist". In
most cases basic electronics dropouts wound up back at Lackland for Security
Police training. I think part of the criteria in choosing between the two
was whether or not they wanted you walking around with a loaded gun.
Knowing your alternatives if you didn't make it was quite a training
incentive.

Had a friend who went through Navy basic electronics school back in the late
'80s or early '90s, at Great Lakes. One of his classmates, who was apparently
not doing well and had a family to support, cracked under the pressure and shot
(killed) one of his chiefs and maybe another instructor (I forget). I imagine
he's been specialising in making little rocks out of big ones ever since.

Sometimes the Navy can be quite tolerant but I guess it all depends
on the crime. Back in '59 after I had been in school for a couple months,
I asked about the empty lower bunk nearby and was told, " Oh, that
belongs to Hillberg. He should be back any month now. He's in the
brig for rolling the cab driver outside the gate."
Guess he didn't have the fare.

If you have problems learning the school work the best thing to do is
right away ask for help. Don't wait- the longer you wait the farther
you get behind. Don;lt get the ide4a that asking for help is dumb or
makes you look stupid. In mnay cases people will have had no exerience
whatsoever in the field. Talk to your instructor. Latch on to the
people who are getting the subjects down pat. Don't stop with just one
source - maybe someone else has a different slant and can get it
across to you. Tech school is a great opportunity. Besides, you would
not have been selected to go to one unless the tests you took showed
you had some aptitude in that area. Not that that means you will like
the area - my brother went to the Navy's long electronic school on
Treasure Island back in the 50's and hated the field. He did good,
made E5 on his first hitch, got out and never worked in the field
again, and became an acountant. Go figure. OTH if you don't like the
field and can't get it after hard work - try requesting a transfer to
something you do want.
