Medal of Honor message to be delivered at Mighty 8th

(EXCERPT) Retired Air Force general to focus on lessons learned from
living recipients of America's highest award for military valor.

A retired Air Force major general best known for his role as a
television and radio military analyst will discuss America's living
Medal of Honor recipients during a speech Tuesday at the Mighty Eighth
Air Force Museum in Pooler.

Perry M. Smith says his speech will include many of the heroic stories
he discovered while helping edit Peter Collier's book, "Medal of
Honor: Portraits of Valor Beyond the Call of Duty," released in
October 2003.

"There is so much we can learn from these few remaining survivors,"
Smith said. "And the list grows shorter each day."

Of the more than 3,400 recipients, fewer than 140 are alive. Collier's
book tells the stories of more than 100.

One in particular left an impression on Smith - the bravery of Army
1st Lt. Jack Jacobs during the Vietnam War.

Jacobs was an adviser to a Vietnamese infantry battalion in 1968 when
it came under a devastating fire that disabled the commander. Although
severely wounded, Jacobs took command, withdrew the unit to safety,
and returned again and again to rescue the wounded. He saved the lives
of a U.S. advi...
