View Full Version : LAS approaches

Some questions about flying to LAS:
1. The RNAV RWY 1R (http://naco.faa.gov/d-tpp/0903/00662R1R.PDF) has
two IAFs: BOACH and SKEBR. I can find BOACH on the enroute chart (on
V21 between WHIGG and CRESO) but not SKEBR. Where is it?
2. Same question for KACCY intersection, which is the IAF for the
VOR/DME-A (http://naco.faa.gov/d-tpp/0903/00662VDA.PDF)
3. The route I get from DUATS low-altitude auto-routing (from VNY) ends
at OASYS (on V394), which does not appear to be the IAF for any
approach. Am I missing something? Is DUATS broken? If I were cleared
"as filed" and lost comm, which should I do when I got to OASYS?
Thanks,
rg

SKEBR should be defined as the LAS R-211, 28DME. It's a little
bit northeast of CLARR.

KACCY? LAS R-180, 16.5DME, and/or BLD R-224, 21DME.

ugh.. You'll want to avoid anything near OASYS (in fact, ATC
will keep you away from it) as you'll come into conflict with the
BOACH2, MCCRN3, and SHEAD5 departures out of KLAS.
Two things. If you're looking at flying into KLAS, if you're a
prop or slow and go, consider filing the CRESO3 arrival. They've kept
that one around for the slower planes so they can be kept out of the
main CLARR/KEPEC arrival stream. This would put you pretty much in line
with V21 all the way to BLD.
Secondly, this is all under normal configuration at KLAS
(normal being landing/departing runways 19L/R and 25L/R). Currently
25L/7R is closed for reconstruction (as been since October and will be
until May) so current calm wind config is landing 25R and 1L, departing
1R. From the south, you'll more than likely be given something low to
cross underneath the SoCal departures at BOACH, then turned directly
towards LAS. Clear skies prevail for the most, so visuals will be in
order.

Did you check the STARS for LAS?

Yep. Couldn't find them there either. But I didn't do an exhaustive
search.

I guess I should have phrased the question a little differently. I know
where these waypoints are (obviously they're on the approach plate).
What I want to know is how do you get to them if they're not shown on
the enroute chart? (I'm talking theory here. I know that in practice
you just get vectored around, and it's visual approaches 99.9% of the
time.)
Conversely, what do you do if your DUATS-recommended flight plan
terminates at a waypoint that is not the IAF for any approach and you
lose comm?

SKEBR is on the CLARR2 STAR. And, although it is not part of V-394,
SKEBR lies directly on V-394.

SKEBR is on the LAS R-211 at 28 DME, you'll find it on the CLARR TWO STAR:

KACCY is on the LAS R-180 at 16.5 DME. I can't find it on any enroute chart
or STAR, but it does have a feeder route from BLD VORTAC.

You mean if you suffer some bizarre failure in IMC that prevents you from
receiving on any comm radio but leaves your other avionics unaffected? You
should get your airplane on the ground before it does spread and you lose
your ability to navigate. Pick an approach that you feel is most
advantageous to you, broadcast your intentions in the event that your
transmitter is still functioning, squawk 7600 briefly to let ATC know you
can't hear them (they probably know already), squawk 7700 briefly to let
them know you consider it an emergency, then return to your original code
for better tracking and to silence any annoying alarms. Fly your approach
and land.

SKEBR is connected to the enroute environment through the CLARR2 arrival,
KACCY is connected via the feeder route from BLD VORTAC.

Just returned from an uneventful (and CAVU, albeit a bit bumpy) trip to
LAS. Thanks for all the responses!

Not much fun when the Santa Anas are at play. Where are you based?

VNY. It was uphill both ways :-( But none of my passengers got sick,
and I totally greased both landings so it wasn't a total loss :-)
