When it rains, it pours! First Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's
reconnaissance P-38 from 1944 was found in the sea near Marseille and
the Swedish ELINT DC-3 from 1952 was recovered from the Baltic Sea,
and now this: http://www.pelastamalmi.org/en/bulletins/kaleva.html
(While you're there, please take a minute to sign the petition to save
the living, historic Malmi Airport from being turned into a suburb.)

Text is in Swedish I'm afraid.

There is news today that the missing TP-47 Catalina #47002 (
http://www.avrosys.nu/aircraft/Transport/265Tp47.htm ) has now been found by the same team that
found the ELINT DC-3. It was found on it's nose at a depth of over 100m. This aircraft was shot down
three days after the downing of the ELINT DC-3 when it was engaged in search and rescue operations.
The missing TP-47 Catalina sea plane was found some 20-22 km east of the position given in official
reports, and the discrepancy is believed to depend on the fact that Sw authorities didn't want it to
look as if the Catalina had voilated Soviet air space. The fact is thought that it hadn't been
violating Soviet air space, but another Catalina had strayed over land as a result of a navigational
error by the crew. The Soviets mistook the first Catalina for the one that had been over the
mainland, and shot it down. The two Mig-15 had to exhaust their ammo however before the Catalina
pilot decided to put the aircraft down beside a West german freighter. It is unlikely however that
the Catalina will be recovered, since there is another example at the Sw Air Force museum at
Malmslätt ( http://www.flygvapenmuseum.se/english/index.htm )

Thanks once again, Per, for another fascinating look into a piece of Swedish
aviation archaeology.
