Anybody know where I can get data on the comparative cost of American WW2
aircraft (during the war), especially P-38, P-51, F4U, F6F, P-40, B-17?
Similar data for British planes would also be appreciated.

More than you'll ever want to know, for the USAAF. (Watch for line wrap)
http://www.maxwell.af.mil/au/afhra/wwwroot/aafsd/aafsd_list_of_tables_aircraftequipment.html
Specifically, you want Table 82, "Average Unit COst of Airplanes
Authorized, By Principal Model: Fiscal Year 1939 to 1945"
Nothing for the Brits, though.

I believe that Dean's "America's Hundred Thousand" has this
information, for the fighters anyhow.

5,000 pounds Sterling was the nominal price used by Beaverbrook's Spitfire
fund, to give the punters a reasonable target to aim for.
Needless to say, the price of a Mk II in 1940 would be different to a Mk XVI
in 1945, but another 'spares list' price in 1940 can be found here ....

Yes, I had a mental picture of the 'Spitfire Fund' ladder on the side of
our Town Hall during the war. I assumed it was a convenient round
figure.

Quite! All that extra weight has to be paid for.
