Seems like the Sandy Eggo UT made a few minor mistakes in their
retelling. According to the AF biography at
http://www.af.mil/bios/bio.asp?bioID=5871 he got 36, not 39 missions
in WW II, 9 missions in Korea and served at 7th AF Hq in Saigon during
his Vietnam experience.

No mention of a Purple Heart, so the "shot down several times" during
WW II doesn't seem likely.

Clearly the guy spent a lot of time in service to his country.

Well, if he got out without getting hurt he wouldn't have been awarded
a Purple Heart, would he? And if he was lucky enough to make it back
to friendly territory before bailing out he would have gone back into
action. But making it back to friendly territory and bailing out
unharmed *several* times.... ? Seems pretty unlikely IMO. I think
the writer for the Tribune may be confusing a belly landing with
getting shot down.
