Art, how much photography had you done before the war? That's a gritty
journalistic shot that tells a story, but it's obvious you had an eye
for composition.

I got my first camera when I was 10 years old. whne the war came I had alrady
made hundreds of photos and had quite a few published. I carried my camera all
through. When the war ended the Group Photo Officer was sent home and I took
over the photo operation of the 344th bomb Group earning a second MOS. I then
had a few 4x5 Graphics to use and took one along when we passed through Aachen.
Thse shots were mad with a 4x5 Graphic hand held..

Good choice of camera - did you manage to hang on to one?

(I have a 2.25 x 3.25 miniature Speed Graphic that still takes really
good pics)

Are you using a digital large format back, or has the big stuff gone the
way of the darkroom?

I have to say I'm waiting for the time and budget to get my darkroom
going again. Oh, there's nothing much to film developing, but I've never
stopped feeling the magical experience of a black & white print start to
become visible in the developer.

All the large and medium format stuff is gone. Now instead of watching the
image come up in the developer, I watch it roll off the printer. (grin)

Is it that I'm too young or too old to cope with that? Of course,
Photoshop is too different a model than an enlarger.

That was working with POP (printing out paper) and it wasn't my dad doing the
printing. (sigh)

If I remember correctly, they ended up with a brown and white finish. ?

Hmmmm...well, I did experiment with some cyanotypes like that!

The ones I did were blue and white. I used large format negatives in
contact with a paper I made myself -- don't remember the exact formula,
but the dark agent was ferric ferricyanide.

Yes.,they were brown and would fade in time. I rinsed them in a plain 5%
Sodium Thiosulfate solution and they turned green and became permanent.
