Need Advice - What to check when renting a plane? by
[email protected]
Hi All, as new licensed pilot I am looking else where for plane
rentals. As you know that the price is a great concern. For a C152 it
can be from $59/hr (wet) to $90/hr (wet). big differences.
My question is, when you first go to a FBO, what to check when seeing a
plane that you never flew on. ...

It figures.... by
Jay Honeck
8 years ago I got into "airport advocacy" in response to the crying
need to re-pave our taxiways here in Iowa City. 8 long years of
meetings, during which the "fix" went from a relatively cheap
top-coating (or even asphalt sealing) to a complete re-do, simply
because the powers-that-be stalled for...

Rental prices in Mobile, AL by
Dan Luke

For comparison to what you may be seeing in your area.
These airplanes receive care that is above average for rentals, at least in
my experience. I have flown two of them.

How much is autopilot on commercial flights today? by
Mxsmanic
How much of an average commercial flight on a large airline and
aircraft today is done automatically, via autopilot, autoland, and so
on? Including takeoff and landing. I know that the bulk of a flight
is on autopilot, which makes sense since autopilots are good at flying
planes and that's lots...

"FAA Survey"? by
Orval Fairbairn
Last week, I received a telephone call purporting to be from FAA,
querying Commercial-rated pilots, seeking "your satisfaction with FAA
services." When I answered that I am not currently exercising the
Commercial privileges, she ended the "survey."
Foolishly, I failed to take notes regarding...

Anyone have any other details about this? What aerobatic competition was
this?
They had footage on the local news last night, and both planes were flying
just fine until the trailing one broke the leading one's tail off with its...

I'm about to begin Flight-school, and I'm always curious about

seen in this video. Is this low Take Off approach on purpose or Pilot

Why are headings still magnetic? by
Mxsmanic
Like AM radio, magnetic headings are still with us, even though
navigation in general has advanced by leaps and bounds. When will
true headings be used? The magnetic poles are in continuous motion;
the rotational poles are stable.
Eventually, the magnetic poles will move so far that every...

X11 pirep by
Andrey Serbinenko
Had a chance to try X11 today. First impressions, comparing to
13.4 I normally use:
1. gel pads of X11 are thinner, and they're flattened, and aren't
as tight against the head as the 13.4 ones. As a result,
passive attenuation of 13.4 is vastly superior to passive X11.
2. weight. X11 is...

No more "Left Downwind"? by
Jay Honeck
We attended a safety seminar on Tuesday during which the FAA presenter
(who was otherwise outstanding) went over a list of unapproved radio

prohibited "Any other traffic please advise...")
To our surprise, he claimed that the...

Seeking opinion on Penn Yan SuperHawk O-360 by
Zippity
Hi,
Our C172 O-320 is well over TBO and needs new cylinders. We are
thinking we might just bite the bullet and get a new engine at this
stage.
The Penn Yan Aero SuperHawk STC looks like a good option since it
would give us 180 HP - a nice extra safety margin for our short strip.
Has anyone here...
