Stupid transponder question, or, stumped by the wife by
John Kirksey
So we were watching "Seconds From Disaster" on NGC last night, which
happened to be on AA 77. When they mentioned that seconds after gaining
control of the aircraft the hijackers turned off the transponder (along with
a brief explanation of what the transponder does), my wife simply says:
"That's...

The danger of assumption by
Jay Honeck
The other night, as we approached rotation speed, we skipped half a dozen
times before breaking cleanly. I made some snide remark about this to Mary,
and assumed that she was holding the nose down too long, causing the skip.
"Poor piloting," I harrumphed to myself... "Danged tires are too...

Newbie Airline Pilot Career & Seniority Question. by
EFIS2
Dear all,
I'm interested in perhaps entering flight training to be a pilot.
Couple of quick questions.
Are all airlines based on the seniority system, even in Europe?
Are there any exceptions to this system?

Into the Sun by
Kyle Boatright
We had gone to the NC beach for the weekend, and had to bug out because of
the hurricane threat. I was worried that even if the hurricane didn't head
right for us, that the outlying winds might get strong enough to prevent us
from departing.
Despite the winds Saturday evening (15 G 25), we had a...

FlightAware web site -- finally free flight tracking by
Chip Hermes
Finally, there's a free web site that does tracking of IFR flights and
maps and graphs and whatnot:
http://flightaware.com/
For IFR folks, you can enter airports that you're flying between and
get a list of IFR routes that people have flown, which makes flight
planning a lot easier.

Convair NX-2? by
Capt. Doug
I was thumbimg through an aviation book catalog while waiting for a flight
today and saw a blurb about a book about the NX-2. Apparently Convair
designed it with the intention of using a nuclear reactor for thrust. Has
anyone read the book? How far did Convair and General Electric actually get
in...

why is Vne a TAS? by
private
Hello Todd,
In a recent thread on R.A..S.(interesting question about stall and airspeed)
that morphed into a discussion about coffin corner, Todd explained,
"Flutter limits high true airspeed operations, and it is possible to get to
the coffin corner where stall speed and Vne approach each...

Arrest King Daley! by
Jay Honeck
This from EAA:
FAA Determines Meigs Closure Illegal, Imposes Maximum Fine
Nearly 2 1/2 years after the fact, the FAA has determined that Mayor Richard
Daley violated federal law when he ordered bulldozers to carve large "X's"
into the runway at Chicago's lakefront jewel, Merrill C. Meigs Field,...

CAP gridding by
Robert M. Gary
I'm supposed to learn about dividing my sectional chart into search
grids. I have several CAP on-line publications but none show an actual
sectional. Does anyone have an online, scanned example of a properly
done sectional chart?

First Date by
Jay Honeck
This morning, while working out together, my 15 year old son asked (out of
the clear blue sky) if he can take a friend flying next week.
Absentmindedly, I reply "Sure -- what's the guys name?" -- to which my son
replied "Anna..."
Yikes! His first date with a girl, and he wants to take her flying...

Flying as Therapy by
Jay Honeck
It was the day from Hell. From the moment I arrived at the Inn on our
"Monday morning" (in real life, Friday), literally everything that could go
wrong, did.
Everything from an overnight guest, on the lam from the law (and who needed
to be arrested *here*, of course, for all to see), to a major...

Oh my god.

I would normally say something witty, but I am speechless. Is it a
scam? Perhaps an organic brain dysfunction? Or maybe this man is a
brave new form of life being weeded out my Darwin...
