Los Angeles area airports by
Kevin
I am thinking about buying my first airplane and am seeking some
advise about where to base it. Burbank is the closest airport to me
and where I did my primary training, but I don't know if there are any
affordable options there. Whiteman and El Monte are about equal
distance from my home. Of...

J-3 Checkouts/vacations by
Dave
I fly a Gulfstream 3 and am looking at semi-retiring next year.
I plan on getting a Piper Cub, and offering a package vacation which
would include a J-3 checkout, sunset boat ride, and a week in a
condo/house on or near the beach in Gulf Shores, Alabama. There would be
other goodies offered such...

Getting the bug for a new plane by
Gerry Preston
....and wondering if anyone here has bought a factory-new plane
recently. . .
I bought a new C-172S in December 2001 out of Cessna factory
inventory, through a local Florida dealer. The dealer
wouldn't budge off MSRP, but Cessna incentives amounted to
about $7500.
I've enjoyed the plane but want...

hangar fire extinguisher by
[email protected]
I see a neighbor's hangar has two conventional fire extinguishers on
the wall. Not a bad idea, I'm sure. But for potential hangar fires are
halon still the best or are the conventional extinguishers just fine?

When Weather Diverts You. . . by
Patty
It's part of flying, and there's nothing you can do about it. . .
perhaps.
You're trying to get to your destination, or maybe you're trying to
get home. You look at the weather and no matter how you plot out your
time, direction of flight, and other options, you're staying put!
Blessing or...

'Hot' cylinder after overhaul? by
Tony Cox
Since a major overhaul about 60 tach hours ago now,
I've noticed my #3 cylinder (O470R, 182) is running
consistently hot. It is typically 30-40 degrees warmer than
the average, which puts it at 4-bars in the EDM700
display. To keep this cylinder temp down, I'm having to
leave the cowl flaps open in...

Mode S Transponders - Can ATC tell the difference? by
Doodybutch
I am the proud owner of a new $5000.00 mode S transponder. I just took my
first long trip with it, and I began to wonder if ATC sees any difference on
their radar screen with Mode S. As you know, Mode S transmits your aircraft
ID as well as your assigned code and altitude.
I did notice that...

VOTE ...HTML or Plain Text??? by
Montblack
I was surprised by the acceptance of an HTML post in another thread. I, for
one, could read the HTML fine. Others said the same thing.
Has the time come for HTML in the newsgroup(s)?
My (change is bad - we fear change) vote is no HTML ... for now.
I'm being fuddy-duddy with my reason: I get...

ECI vs. Millenium vs. Continental cylinders by
Cooper Randy
I've read through the archives.... but would still like to hear a few more
real world experiences before I spend $7-8K on a set of IO-520 cylinders.
Anybody out there have enough hours on an overhaul using new ECI Cermi-Nil
cylinders to write home about? How about Milleniums? I'm...

Have you checked into Destination Direct? Runs in Wintel, has
the ability to support most GPS in real-time, has the capability
to display current charts, and supports flight-planning both

Beechcraft Sundowner by
VM
I'm considering buyint a 1978 Beechcraft Sundowner. I have concerns about
being able to find spare parts, etc. I'm also considering a Piper Archer
II. The Sundowner I've found is $15,000 less than a comparable Piper
Cherokee Archer II. The Sundowner looks like a new airplane both inside...

What's an old Cessna 300 NAV/COM worth? by
Radu Tenenbaum
We recently replaced one of our Cessna 300 radios (it was still
working) with a TKM MX-300. Someone at our aiport is interested in
buying the old radio and I'm wondering what a fair price would be.
Thanks,
Radu

WX1000 Stormscope battery by
D. J. Gooding
I own a Mooney M20J with a WX1000 Stormscope whose backup battery has run out.
The factory wants $600 to replace the battery. (Flat rate repair policy.)
Does anyone know of a practical alternative? I have an electronics background
but have no technical data on the unit. Also, am I directing the...

STC question by
John Galban
I was always under the impression that an engine related STC had to be
approved for both the engine and the airframe on which it was mounted.
I've seen this in applications like autogas STCs and STCs that bump a
150 hp O-320 to 160 hp.
At a recent Cessna fly-in a saw something that made me look...

Anyone who flys a lightplane into known icing is just plain nuts. If
you had seen what I have, no one would disagree.

Seems like a nice redundancy solution for us single engine drivers.
This thread from November - December 2002 doesn't have a reference to the web
site, so I thought I'd update the thread......
