New HD video of ridge soaring Logan, UT by
Bruno
This video covers a 25 mile ridge run north of Logan Utah. Thought it
might be interesting for those pilots who are thinking of flying at
the Logan contest this year in August to see what the ridge headed
into Idaho is...

New camera for cockpit photography by
5Z
I just made my first flight with the new Panasonic DMC-ZS3 camera and
it's quite impressive. The lens does an effective 25 - 300mm zoom, so
not only can you get good pilot perspective shots, but air to air
photography is also possible without the need to fly dangerously close
to the other ship. ...

Contest Day 2 Club Class Regionals USA by
rlovinggood
Sorry for the late report. Landouts will do that to the reporter...
Both 15m and Club Class flew tasks today and, drum roll please, Club
Class flew the FIRST ever Assigned Task in America!!! WooHoo.
But then, I hit the dirt. Along with a few others. Same in 15m. A
lot of us didn't return to...

No Contest Day at Cordele by
rlovinggood
The gray skies kept the sun away and the temperatures low this
morning. Many people were sporting about in their long sleeved
sweatshirts or jackets to keep the cool-ish air at bay. But ever the
optimist, pilots were assembling their gliders and filling them with
water (15m Nationals, not the...

SUA files and COTS GPS Units by
chipsoars
Is it possible to load a SUA file on a COTS such as a Garmin Map76 or
ETREX? If so, is there a preferred format or procedure? I've
performed some searching on RAS and Google with no success.
thanks,
Chip Fitzpatrick

Our soaring friends - OT by

Off topic, but interesting . . .

Subj: Eagles 3, crows 0
I got this from a friend who runs a 2000 acre corn farm up around Barron
WI, not far from Oshkosh. He used to fly F4Es and F-16s for the Guard
and participated in the first Gulf War...
Submitted for your enjoyment, and as a...

Golf Carts - Electric vs. Gas Revisited by
[email protected]
To start with, I have searched the R.A.S. archives for information
regarding the gas vs. electric question. I've also done a fair amount
of research outside of R.A.S. regarding towing with golf carts.
There's not much info to be found in this "towing" subject area.
I was hoping to get some...

Spin recovery vs tail design by
Ron Ogden
I would like to solicit comments on the question: Compared to a standard
tail configuration such as a 2-33 or Blanik L-13, does the initiation and
recovery from a spin vary substantially in T-tail (ASK-21 type),
all-flying (Phoebus) or V-tail (HP series) sailplanes? Really look forward
to reading...

Trouble transferring file from Cambridge 302 by
[email protected]
I'm using a Cambridge 302 with a Compaq Aero 1550 and I'm running
Pocket Nav. I can't seem to see the flight file after transferring it
from the 302. I'm using the utility program for the transfer. I can
see the flight date and time on the pocket PC, I can see the transfer
taking place as it counts...

The Left vs the Right by
Tuno
I forwarded that hilarious youtube Hitler-as-CD video to my brother,
who several questions later asked me why we have to turn to the left
in the start cylinder but have to turn right when releasing from tow.
I did not have an answer to that question. But I sure hope that I wake
up one day and find...

Contest Day 1 Club Class Regionals USA by
rlovinggood
CLUB CLASS HAS ARRIVED TO THE UNITED STATES! There's no way I can
thank Sam Giltner enough for his perseverance in bringing Club Class
to the States. Finally, we get a class where we can fly assigned
tasks and also fly against a group of gliders that have a tighter
range of handicaps.
Today, the...

Great weekend for a beginner by
vic20owner
Over the weekend I did my first complete takeoff and landing. We were
flying a Super Blanik, and the take off went just great. Then after he
tow, release, and flying around for about 30 minutes demonstrating
some stalls and forward slips and doing some thermaling, my instructor
told me to go ahead...

FS: Gap Tape by
TJ[_1_]
I have one inch wide gap tape for sale.
35 rolls for $40 post paid in the US.
Not as good as the $6-$8 a roll tape, but
a lot cheaper if you put on and take off
tape daily. This is "one day use tape".
Considering the cost of postage these days,
my price is less than $1 a roll after I pay...

SZD Canopy Info by
sisu1a
Anyone know if the SZD-55 canopy uses the same perspex molding as the
SZD-48-3 or the 59? (the Jantar Std 3 and the Acro have the same exact
canopy/frame, I have a 59...)
Before lectures start about how even 'identical canopies' are slightly
different from one individual ship to the next, I'm not...
