New Mexico Fire Devils by
James Hamilton
I fly in the Reno area and I've seen big dust devils
that carry dirt into the air (starting at 4300' MSL,
ground level) up to 12,000' MSL.
At the ground the 'thermal' is rotating but it does
not go up too far (maybe 2000' to 3000' AGL for a real
strong one) before there is no perceptable...

Water Ballast Upgrade by
P.Corbett
Happy holidays all:
A project for me this Winter is to upgrade my ballast system on my
PIK-20. I have two questions and would appreciate any assistance.
(1) One of my bags has a single pinhole leak and I wonder if this can be
repaired in a reliable manner. The material seems to be a thick...

soaring bird photos by
[email protected]
While the photos below
http://www.pbase.com/bret/2005
are not of sailplanes, they are of soaring. A hawk and sandhill cranes.
If, like me, you were fascinated by soaring birds long before you could
even think of soaring yourself, I suspect you will love them as much as
I do. I just stumbled...

Soaring.aero by
PhilH
I have started this thread to keep the soaring community informed of
soaring.aero developments.
I have been asked:
What is the purpose of soaring.aero?
The purpose of soaring.aero is to promote the sport of soaring.
While there are many soaring sites out there, many of them excellent, I
think...

Final Glide: Edward "Ted" Pearson by
[email protected]
Ted passed away on 6th November 2005 in Harare, Zimbabwe, where he
lived with his wife Aldyth. Over the last 10 months he had been
battling lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos products in the
late 1940's and early 1950's.
Ted won the South African Standard Class Championships in a...

How to stiffen a limp gooseneck? by
HL Falbaum
Our club flagship--a K21 has an aging problem. The gooseneck (for the
microphone) has gone limp. I have considered splints and ductape, but that
is cumbersome and unsightly. I am looking for rejuvenation if possible.
Replacing it is possible, but it looks like some fine wire splicing will...

Aviation weather using XM radio by
Eric Greenwell
Has anyone tried this in a glider? The satellite mosaic, TFR,
precipitation type, and NEXRAD displays looked interesting.

Mounting cameras by
keithw
Another style more widely used in the entertainment/movie industry is
called Cloth Backed Gaffers Tape. It features a strong cloth backing,
not plastic and a better adhesive. It will not turn to mush and leave
gobs of hard to clean off adhesive all over your finish. Its available
in a number of...

Landing gear - stupid question... by
Capt. Geoffrey Thorpe
First, I've been told, by someone that taught middle school, that whoever
said "there is no such thing as a stupid question" never taught middle
school... :-)
Second, I should confess up front that I don't fly or know that much about
gliders.
But... I was doing some virtual tire kicking over on...

Many of you will not know the name William H. "Bill? Bill WHO?!"

proponent this week. Bill passed away of natural causes on December 1st
after a long, and very full, life.
Bill was best known for his service and contributions...

Go to their home page and click on the 'refresh' button.
You will scroll through a bunch of photos. If you
see a repeat photo, it doesn't mean you've seen them
all. Keep hitting the refresh button.
Nice work!
There is also work being done to...

How to Buy a Glider Afordably, or Euro vs ContraFund by
[email protected]
A year ago I suggested that the way to counter the high Euro was to
invest your money and wait. As an investment vehicle I recommended the
Fidelity ContraFund (FCNTX). Now, I am not one to make idle
suggestions: I am personally heavily invested in this fund.
Here are the results one year...
