Camping on Madeline Island by
Jay Honeck
So, tomorrow morning, at 0-dark-thirty, my 15-year-old son and I are
blasting off for "Up North" -- in this case, Madeline Island, just
off-shore in Lake Superior. Atlas is loaded to the gunwales with
bikes, tents, coolers, food -- you name it. We've got two days.
Mary and I went there a couple...

Passport or no? by
Robert M. Gary
I thought I was going to have to spent $300 to get passports for my
wife and kids when coming back from Mexico next year but now I'm not
sure. Reading AOPA's site
http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/newsitems/2005/050412passport_info.html
They claim that after Dec 31st "will be required to have a passport...

Qs re ADS-B technology by
Andrew Gideon
Someone gave an ADS-B presentation at our club's meeting last night. It
was terrific, but some interesting questions were asked. I'm wondering if
anyone happens to know the answers or if someone can point me to a
reference.
ADS-B ground stations appear to have a range of about 150 miles,...

A sad day in Iowa City by
Jay Honeck
With little warning (and even less fanfare) Runways 18 and 36 have been
closed
at the Iowa City Municipal Airport -- forever. As of this morning,
for the
first time since the 1930s, KIOW is a 2-runway airport.
The VOR 36 approach is therefore currently unavailable. According...

Ladies & Gentlemen: Happy Fourth! by
Jay Honeck
To my Fellow Americans: Happy Independence Day!
Just think, if we hadn't won the war for independence from Great
Britain, some 230 years ago, we all wouldn't be speaking Spanish
today... :-)
Seriously, where else can a man hop in his own airplane, load it up
with car gas, and take his family...

My flyabout by

I'm not world's the greatest pilot, web designer, or writter. With that
warning in mind, if you are bored, check out
www.iPerformax.com/flyabout/flyabout.html for details on my fly-about
the continental US. I'll be adding more pictures and captions later
this week.

Whew - ASI died in flight by
Marc CYBW
Had my first "incident" in flying after some 175 hours in 172s mostly but
also Warriors and Arrows.
After 4 hours dual and solo learning how to fly my new fractional
ownership 182S, I decided I needed some solo practice and went out for an
hour of flying the circuit. Started my takeoff run and...

A310 mishap, 120 dead :( by
[email protected]
It appears that there was a flight deck fire immediately upon
touchdown, preventing the pilots from braking. The airplane landed and
seemingly shot straight along the runway and beyond, until it could go
no further.
An unfortunate if freakish accident.

Busted TFR, what to expect? by
bob
Seems I busted a VIP TFR Monday near Sacramento (VP Cheney was in town
raising money for a couple of congressmen). On landing at my
destination I was asked by the airport manager to call an ATC number,
who got my info and said they would forward it to the local FSDO as a
"pilot deviation". I'm...

Verdant green... by
Jay Honeck
The kids wanted some time at home, so last night Mary and I cooked out
alone at the hangar. Chicken and shrimp kebabs on the grill, crab
salad and a baked potato rounded out an excellent repast, followed by
flopping down in the sling chairs to watch the clouds drift by
overhead...
No wind...three...

The Ghost of Andy Granatelli Tuned My Airplane! by
Bob Chilcoat
Friday, one of my partners and I changed the oil. Afterwards, we took it up
for a spin to reward ourselves. As I rotated, I glanced down at the tach
and was rather horrified. Redline on the Archer is 2,700 RPM. We were
turning 3,300! 600 RPM over redline. Huh?! Since we still had the full...
