Mooney M20 Preflight and Cowl by
Jon Kraus
Do you take the cowl off a 172 when you pre-flight it? I have never and
was never taught to do that. Besides the gaping hole in the m20c cowl
should allow you to peek at just about everything.

First 100 hours by
Jim Burns
We've put our first 100 hours on our Aztec since buying it mid-August and
this weekend we had the 50hr and 100hour AD's complied with. Fuel leak
inspection (50hrs, pilot can do this one), Fuel valve/cable inspection,
Engine mount inspection, Exhaust system inspection. Everything looked...

Insurance - don't believe the first broker you call by
Michael
I wound up inheriting a student. Older guy (in his 50's) who had
taken lessons on and off, and finally finished. Brand new private
pilot, well over 100 hours at checkride. And he went out and bought a
Bonanza. And not a little one, either - a 1970's A-36 six-seater.
His CFI at the local FBO...

What's going on here? by
Jay Honeck
Our JPI EDM-700 engine analyzer may have paid for itself today.
Here's the scenario:
Mary is PIC. During her run-up, the left mag dropped a bit more than the
right. She leaned it back (the usual fouled-plug procedure) and it smoothed
out to within specs. Still not as smooth at the right, but...

New Planes from old companies by
Dude
Okay, its getting boring so, here is a new twist on an old subject.
Beech and Cessna have recently seen HUGE increases in demand for aircraft
with the G1000 cockpits. Will this cause them to rethink the introduction
of a new piston design to compete with the new players?
If so, how long till you...

What is a "short field" for a PA28-181 by
Roy Page
I have been trying to determine the length of a runway that would be
considered a "short field" for my Archer II.
The two instructors that I work with on occasions disagree on the amount of
flaps to use for takeoff at gross weight.
One guy says my airfield with a 2,800ft runway is a "short field"...

Sources for retread tires?? by
Jim Burns
We're looking for sources to buy a set of retread 700 x 6 8 ply tires from.
The guy we bought our Aztec from only had 6 ply tires on the main gear. 6
plys aren't rated high enough for our gross weight and the POH clearly calls
for 8 plys.
There seems to be a shortage of 8 ply cases in this...

clearview inline air filter by
Mike Noel
I want to protect my vacuum instruments with a filter between the vacuum
regluator and the (dry) vacuum pump on my 74 Archer. Spruce sells the
Clearview for about 50 bucks, and sells the filter plus mounting hardware
and STC for about 85 bucks. Does anyone have any experience with this or
other...

Owning Update by

In addition to my owning update, my ISP also changed news servers, and I
took the opportunity to change my handle.
So... this is the poster formerly known as "The Weiss Family".
Well in about six weeks of ownership, I've put about 35 hours on my Beech
Super III (and more money than I care to...

Aircraft certification questions. by
psyshrike
Howdy,
How does FAA type certification relate to intellectual property
rights? For example: everything in an O-235 has been out of patent for
years now. Same with old aircraft designs. Is there any reason why
somebody couldn't tool up and start ripping out O-235s, and selling
them new?
I ask...

some cost info by

This is just one man's numbers, but they are real world and may be of interest.
I am particularly anal about my aircraft expenses . . . every nickel spent on
flying (including buying toys and gadgetry, charts,, landing fees, fuel,
WHATEVER) is kept in an Access database. There are the following...

Oil Change Regularity by
zatatime
I fly my bird about 50 hours per year. I was taught by an old-timer
that 50 hours was fine for oil changes and that a year was an
acceptable calendar period.
In the other threads it seems many have a higher frequency than this.
Would people chime in with how often calendar and flight time...

172 owners - End the Draft by
Roger Long
Every 172 I've ever flown has had so much air pouring in around the left
doorpost that the pilot's air vent was superfluous. I've thought about
wearing a ski mask for winter flying. I, and many others, have always
thought it was coming in through the stall horn and just something you had
to put up...

KT76C Mode C transponder - what is it worth? by

1. What sort of price could one get for it? It is covered by a 2 year
Honeywell extended warranty, starting Oct 2004, which I believe is

New ones are going for a bit over $1,700. I would auction it on Ebay with a
minimum bid of $850.

CO mystery - any ideas? by
Andrew Gideon
Our Cessna R182 is getting CO in the cockpit. We've now had three different
shops look at it multiple times, all to no (complete) effect. They've done
things like resealing the firewall, the gear-wells, the exhaust, and the
like. But still we get CO.
We've swapped CO detectors around between...
