'I'll be using no engine, just perfect aerodynamics and my skills'
With a glide ratio of 1:3.8 his definition of 'perfect aerodynamics' leaves
something to be desired I think.

amusing in so many ways..:-) - The plonker has landed ! by

When is a wing not a wing?
I've just watched Felix Baumgartner land live on television.
He has a 1.5 m span 'wing' contraption strapped to his back. In effect we
have a bloke who has succesfully talked a drinks company out of a chunk of
money to fly a very low performance glider across the...

Across Nevada and Part Way Back (long) by
Marry Daniel or David Grah
David Grah
The flight had been arranged for Wednesday out of my home airport at Bishop,
California, but the weather didn't look good enough that day for the flight
I hoped for. The weather forecast looked better on Thursday, 10 July 2003,
so, the flight would be that day. The main impact of the...

Harder to stall in a steep turn? by
Jim
In his book Gliding, p100, Derek Piggott writes:
"In most modern gliders, the elevator power is not adequate to pull
the wing beyond the stalling angle in a steep bank and it is only just
possible to reach the pre-stall buffet with the stick right back.
This is very different from straight flight...

235 Maule for towing by
Jim Harper
Hi.
For reasons unrelated to soaring, I am in the market for a Maule,
M(x)-235 (where x= 4,5,6,or 7). I am fairly active in my local club
and we occasionally find ourselves short a tow plane.
There is an STC'd tow hook for the thing, so I wanna know: Anyone ever
tow with or behind a Maule 235? I...

I envy you. I wish I could join, but now I am stuck in flat NC. I have flown
in Sta Cilia several times and always enjoyed spectacular views and glides.
Keep us posted on your performance. And send a couple of pics. Cheers,

Triple TE probes, failures by
cernauta
I have seen many (including mine!) Total Energy probes fail: hairpin
cracks in the carbonfibre tube, in the area that fits most deeply into
the plug (in the fin of the glider). The terminal pin, made of aluminum
and glued to the inside of the tube, then is not retained correctly...
and it may stay...

fatality in Hood River, Oregon, USA today. by
Gary Boggs
On Scott Richmond's third flight in his newly purchased ASW-24E, at about
500ft, the motor stalled. He had already turned 90 degrees to the right, he
turned another 90 towards the airport, did several PIOs, maybe pulling on
the manual starter cable, then stalled and spun into an orchard 600 yards...

Support for SN-10 by

Dear all
I have just bought a second hand SN-10 (A).
I had downloaded the manual a few weeks ago, where I discovered I need a
program called PCLink, and a special serial cable. Both are missing...
I searched for the websites (eglider + ilec-gmbh), but they have both
been down in the last 36...

Volkslogger - Shut off the memory warning buzzer? by
BJen
I fly with the sample rate on my VL set to give me about 9+
hours of data recording. That's sufficient for two normal
flights, and I usually dump it after every flight. However,
the thing begins complaining about low memory when it has 8
hours left, and it keeps complaining every few minutes. ...

A Waikerie slip up? by
Vassilios Mazis
One thing is for sure, the climb gets no better.
But there is an interesting effect that few people are aware of:
Higher speed means higher Reynold's numbers accross all of the wing,
in direct proportion. Higher Reynold's number generally means higher
efficiency. Therefore, there may be some small...
