Thermalling, Anyone! by
Dan Marotta
Sure glad I've got a square, ram-air chute AND know how to collapse it!
You can see clearly the associated dust devil..

Wild Vario Needle Swings by
[email protected]
First flight today in glider with LX 7007 and Winter varios. Needles on both the LED vario and the Winter
mechanical would swing wildly from 10 kts up to 10 kts down all thru the flight- mostly in cruise,
but also in the early phase of thermalling. Needle and LED display seemed synchronous. ...

Gather local wind data by
Anders Petersson
Hi
I have developed a system "Windsond" to gather local wind data at different altitudes in an easy way. This is done by launching a 60 liter helium balloon with electronics that transmits back sensor data as it ascends. On the ground, a laptop receives the data and displays diagrams of wind speed,...

School Soaring Project? by
Waveguru
I wish we could get this project going in more schools around the world.

Seems like a good way to get kids involved in aviation?

Looking for an exciting soaring video featuring SGS 2-33 by
son_of_flubber
Attention talented videographers.
It would be valuable to have at least one exciting soaring video that features a nice SGS 2-33. Students could view it before they show up at the club for their introductory flight.
One idea would be to document an introductory flight in a scenic area. That way...

InReach: does it have a "daily" track display? by
Eric Greenwell[_4_]
There's a big irritation caused by the Spot web page map where your
track is displayed: the new track ("today's") overlaps with the older
portion of the previous day's track.
That happens because you can not select a "daily" display, where only
today's track shows; instead, the smallest time...

Delorme InReach reporting elevation or altitude ?? by
[email protected]
Has anyone of the early adopters actually flown with the new DeLorme InReach ?
I had a contact with their tech support a while back, who mentioned that they report elevation, not altitude.
Also their tracking pages mention elevation.
I found tracks of Paul/Frank and Sean, but they look like they...

Is a 45 year old student pilot considered 'youth'? by
son_of_flubber
What are the issues that keep soaring from training and retaining 'older youth'?
There's a lot of talk about recruiting 'youth' into soaring. Does RAS/SSA put 45+ y.o. students in the youth category? Who exactly are we trying to recruit?
Today's 45+ y.o.s are the ones who will be flying...

NoIR sunglasses by
son_of_flubber
NoIR is a privately held company based in Michigan. I have no financial interest in the company.
I've not seen NoIR brand sunglasses mentioned in soaring circles. They have some interesting low-cost high-function options for lenses and frames. They has some interesting Infrared blocking lens...

Outfitting a Cessna 182 with glider towing gear by
[email protected]
I have found a local seasoned pilot who lives in Nephi, Utah who owns a Cessna 182 and is wanting to offer tows and is willing to put tow gear on his plane. That is great news that we won't always have to fly in tow planes to this amazing location to soar. The only question is where do you go to...

Max Gross Weight Question by
150flivver
Our glider has two max takeoff weights, one with water ballast and one with only pilot (134 lb difference). I just weighed the glider and the empty weight subtracted from the max takeoff weight (no water ballast) limits the useful load to 225. There's still some room to play with for the forward...

Turn coordinator? How dare they! by
Sean F (F2)
I noticed the fancy panel photo being used by the SSA to entice people to try soaring (home page of letsgogliding.com) features a BIG, FAT GYRO DRIVEN turn coordinator. I can't believe this has been allowed to remain for nearly a year as it is obviously blasphemy! I'll give it 24 hours before...
