TOST by
Xman
Question:
I would like information regarding installation in the USA of the TOST tow release - as sold on Wings and Wheels - for a tow plane in regards to FAA approval of the installation. I am interested in any installation but am looking at installing on a Scout 8GCBC in particular.

Spring Cleaning and Battery Testing by
ContestID67[_2_]
Each year I like to test my batteries and replace those that do not
have enough capacity for a typical flight of 3-4-ish hours with all
the electronics running. I run two batteries so that removes a worry
about loosing power during a record flight. But how do you perform a
good real world...

Standard Cirrus by
Walt Connelly
Okay folks, your thoughts on the Standard Cirrus? Good, bad indifferent? Flying tail, pros and cons? I am new to gliding, Commercial Add on, 140 flights and approx 100 hours, mostly in 1-34. Would this be a reasonable next step?

2011 U.S. Seniors Day 6 Early Report by
Frank Paynter[_2_]
It’s Saturday morning at 0700, and I’m sitting in my camper at
Seminole Lake Gliderport, sipping my coffee and watching the airport
take form through the dawn and the fog. Right now I can just see the
top of Bob Spitz’s camper, but in a few minutes the office, the
runway, and the trailers on the...

flyWithCE Tip #3: Share flights with your friends by
Uros[_3_]
This happened to most of us - after interesting flight you would like
to show the flight track to your fellow pilots and friends. The
easiest way out is sending IGC file by Email. But there are two
problems. First you have to find appropriate IGC file (they all have
this short eight letter cryptic...

Ventus bT by
BillT
We recently purchased this a/c & really enjoy flying it. However there
are two minor problems with the vent line from the removable 18L fuel
tank:
1) We initially put 15L in the tank & over a period of approx 10hrs
flying, we've lost 3 - 4L due to it sloshing about & draining
overboard. The vent...

2011 Seniors Day 5 Report by
Frank Paynter[_2_]
Well, today dawned foggy again, but at least I wasn’t accosted by the
hawk family on my run. I think I was early enough so they couldn’t
see me go by in all the fog.
At the morning meeting, weatherman Ray Galloway told us that the
synoptic weather conditions were pretty much the same as...

canopy seal by
[email protected]
Hi there, I have about 70 ft. of 5.5 mm silicone tube that I used to
seal my canopy. The manufacturer is selling it in 100 ft section and
that is how I ended up with that excessive amount. If anyone has an
interest of buying it, please call me at 509-380-4106.

2011 Seniors Day 4 Report by
Frank Paynter[_2_]
Day 4 at the 2011 Seniors dawned with thick ground fog hanging over
the field. As I made my way around the field this morning on my
morning ‘run’, the resident hawk family made its displeasure at my
intrusion known by screeching at me for a while, and then flying
away.
The fog burned off fairly...

Age and acquiring Diamonds by
Nyal Williams[_2_]
Some friends have asked me this question and I thought I might relay it
here. Do you know of glider pilots who completed the diamond badge after
they have passed their 80th birthday?

Bird vision by
bildan
This story ( http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/03/110316222022.htm
) may explain some encounters with birds.
A couple of weeks ago I had a red tail hawk glide nonchalantly across
my flight path between the tow plane and me.

Verifying a club members pilot certificate and other paperwork by
John Gilbert[_2_]
A quick question or four:
Does you club verify that a member has a license, a valid BFR, and/or
any other certification documents? Do you record the actual numbers,
photocopy, or just verify?
Is it different if that member is just towing with their private ship,
as opposed to flying a club...

2011 US Seniors Day 3 Report by
Frank Paynter[_2_]
Day 3 here at the 2011 Seniors was a boomer in every sense of the
word. Clouds to die for in all quadrants. Cloud bases at about 4500’
at the start, rising to above 6000’ in the last turn area. Cloud
streets and 5-6kt climbs were common. There was an early concern
about a band of mid-level...

SPOT Mounting - Parachute by
V1[_2_]
I purchased one of the new SPOT’s (SPOT Satellite Messenger, sometimes
called SPOT II). As a fall-back, I have a few options for mounting it
directly on my ship, but I’d prefer a chute mount. I’ve read Allen
Silvers 2009 file on how NOT to attach it to a parachute, although
that file didn’t seem to...

2011 Seniors TA Day 2 Report by
Frank Paynter[_2_]
Day 2 of the 2011 Seniors is in the bag, and we all had a pretty good
time of it. Weather seemed to be better to the south, so the CD
called a 3-turn TAT; south to Myakka Head with a 15 mile radius, then
ENE to Frostproof with a 20 mile radius, then NW to Blackwater Creek
with a 20 mile radius,...
