SSA Memphis Convention, 75th Anniversary by
Robert Gaines
The Convention has additional space to exhibit several
sailplanes. We seek US made older sailplanes such as
an HP, LP-49, Concept 70 or Nugget.
Does anyone in the general area of Memphis own one
of the above?
Thank You,
Robert Gaines

Airtabs by
JS
Here's something that looks interesting for use on glider trailers.
It may improve stability. Called Airtab, it appears to be a turbulator
strip for trucks and trailers.
Anyone have experience with these?

OLC Update by
Ray Lovinggood
OLC now has a direct way of displaying the flight on
Google Earth. Nice! I pulled up Dick Johnson's flight
from Friday and then clicked on the Google Earth button
and I'm transported instantly to Texas.
What will they think of next?

Laister LP-49 for low time pilot by
Jim Hultman
There are few RAS comments on the Laister LP-49. In photos an ungainly
design, but does appear a reasonable transition ship for a low-timer; 31/1
LD, retractable gear, flaps, auto hookups, aluminum wing. How large is the
cockpit? Anyone here with LP-49 flying & rigging experience?

C182 tow hook arrangement? by
[email protected]
I'm looking for a way to put a Tost release mechanism on a C182R.
We have a Tost release on the Pawnee, and it looks so much more
robust than the Schweitzer mechanism.
Wings and Wheels has the Tost arrangement for C172 and Maule, but in
Colorado, Civil Air Patrol has neither of those...

Jantar 48-2 vs Pik20d by
Jeff Runciman
Hi guys,
It has been a while since I have posted here. I have
finally narrowed my search to 2 gliders. I am aware
of the following on each glider:
Jantar - Visibility during tow, and tight cockpit (I
am 5'10' 148 lbs so I fit ok).
Pik 20D - Thick wing mold, parts support, and flaps.

horiz tail airfoil observations by
Brad
I've been perusing Fred Thomas's Sailplane Design book lately. I am
curious, why do most of the modern sailplanes use a non-symetrical
airfoil for the horiz surface, and most of the "older" sailplanes use a
symetrical airfoil?
I was looking at a Krokus at the Pensacola airshow over the...

New Steve Fossett Book - and other new stuff by
Paul Remde
Hi,
I just read the new book "Chasing the Wind: The Autobiography of Steve
Fossett". Below is my review.
I am a big fan of Steve Fossett. I have closely followed many of his record
breaking endeavors over the years. I met him briefly at the Soaring Society
of America convention in February...

Methods of Launch by
Nigel Baker
I have read the launch methods with interest and add
this one, which has not come up yet.
Excuse the ramblings but you may find the story interesting.
Two early gliding Pioneers in Australia called Kevin
Sedgeman and Keith Jarvis were actively building Gliders
in the late 50’s having moved on from...

Airbus 380 by
[email protected]
A few weeks ago there was on RAS a thread concerning the increased cost
of German gliders, due apparently to the voracious appetite of Airbus
for the raw materials: fiberglass, carbon fiber, etc...I read today
that FedEx had cancelled its order and options for a number of A380s,
and UPS was mulling...

Glider ground school syllabus by
[email protected]
I'm teaching a glider ground school for the first time this winter.
Question is does anyone have a syllabus? Or recommendations for a
source from which to create a syllabus. I understand that the 'glider
flying handbook' (FAA-H-8083-13) is the official authority, perhaps not
the best one. What...

More idle curiosity - applicability of US PPL outside the US by
Al Borowski
Hi,
As a side note...Go check out a local Glider club! Cheap, fun, and a
good way to keep your skills up!
I'll have to do some googling on this, since I don't know anything
about it, but it sounds interesting. I mean, it sounds scary, since
isn't gliding basically the "find a...
