old days by
Airman
I sure miss the old days when we had a lively discussion group with
some very experienced pilots opining upon matters. Poster were for the
most part civil and if you could ask the right questions then listen a
guy like Nick Lappos (or many other very experienced pilots) would
respond.

How to hover by
Wannafly
Hello, what are the control inputs required in a hover in an ideal
situation, what I am trying to figure out is what are you doing in a
no-wind situation to hover.
I have read several articles and books about helicopter flying and I am
still a little confused as to what you have to do, from what I...

Power needed for slow SAL vs hover... by
Nick
Is it true that a helicopter requires less power for slow straight and level
flight than for hovering? If so, anyone know any figures for say an
R22?......or even hazard a guess?
Cheers

What is LEAF? by
TM
A newbie question, no doubt, but I need to know.
This is a quote from a GyroBee builder's site:
«There is some variation in the labeling of standard 3/16 aircraft
washers. Primarily, I have labeled them an AN960-316 but you will also
find them labeled AN960-10 (in the LEAF catalog, for...

Gyro's and Licensing by
TM
I've heard talk of new rules in '07 which will affect the lightweight
gyro's which currently require no license. Can anyone comment on this?
I absolutely will get gyro traing before I fly (I'm also a motorcyclist
who learned to ride in 1978 by making two circles around the dealer's
parking lot on...

16 Bell 206's by
Sundance
I have 16 Bell 206's for sale. If you are a former Viet Nam helicopter
pilot, this may be your chance to own your own bird. I was in BUF's
out of Kadena in 1968. Website is boblewis.net/helicopters.
Take a look! -Bob-

Safety of homebuild Helicopters by
JohnO
Hi,
Can someone point me to any official accident statistics that would
demonstrate the relative accident rates of various classes of certified
and experimental helos? Specifically I would want to exclude any
accidents that were pilot error or failure of maintenance. and only
consider accidents...

Dumb Question by
JohnO
When designing rotor systems, you have to keep the tip speed subsonic
to prevent all sorts of problems and losses that would otherwise occur
at the sound barrier, right?
What about large turbofan engines such as on modern airliners? The fan
tips must be travelling at many orders of magnitude...

Any CFI insurance 300h ? by
Steve L.
Hi,
we have a problem here. For a small R22 school we need a new CFI. The
CFII we want, however, has only 202h in R22 (another 250h in small
planes).
Our Pathfinder endorsement requires 300h helicopter for CFIs to give
instruction!
Does anyone here know of a possibility to let this CFI get his...

Homebuilt/Kitbuilt by

Keep reading about problems with kit versions. Anyone know what the
ultimate kitbuilt copter would be if you wanted to carry 2 persons and
1 kid and not spend $344,000 for a Robinson?

Looking for information regarding baloon/helicopter experiment by

I know the video was not fake, but I have no information about it.
I believe I recorded it from a compilation of aircraft accidents but
it was from 20 years ago.
I unfortunately dont have the tape anymore.
The vehicle, I believe - was put together by some contractor for the
forestry service.
It...

TFR not right IMO by
Bart
I was getting ready to go today and noticed that there were two
new TFR's for me to avoid. One of them closed a regional airport,
and the other a few miles away to the northwest. I saw the words
"Secret Service" and figured #1 or #2 was gonna be in town.
I did a news search and found out that the...
