When to best train glider and power? by
private
Many people suggest a large benefit for student power pilots to fly some
dual in a glider and similarly many parts of successful glider piloting can
be more cost effectively learned in a power plane. As an example, it is
cheaper to do multiple landings in a power plane when learning to land.
Do...

When to apply gap seal tape by
soaringjac
I am going to be using 3M perfect it followed by WX Block/Seal. Just wondering when in the process i should apply the new gap seals? I think i read that the seals/tape does not stick too well to freshly WX block/sealed surfaces. Should i put them on now and then mask them off, and then do the whole...

When the whole sky takes a pause... by
danlj
I sorta hate to interrupt the conversations by asking a question about
actual weather, but here we are...
Last fall, I posted a question on "where's the next thermal" that got
helpful responses. Somewhere in this group, a pilot made the
observation that on some days, the thermals vanish...

When jetliners become gliders. by
[email protected]
Finally, Mr. Diblin has researched the actual stats. Supprised us
there have been 14 such incidents in 38 years, but actually remembered
almost all.
How many flights do you recall?
How many unpowered commercial landings since 2001?
All airline drivers should be glider bums.

When is too many at a glider meet by
2G
I recently learned that Bruno has increased the number of gliders for the Nephi, UT event to 80. That's right, eight zero. IMHO, that is too many, even if FLARM is mandated. There will be pilots there from virtually zero cross country time to seasoned racers. They may be lulled into a false sense...

When gliders fail in flight, but pilots manage to land by
son_of_flubber
Bruno Vassel recalls how the control stick broke off in a glider pilot's hand and how that pilot landed the aircraft safely (using rudder to turn and trim to control speed).

Another favorite scenario is 'one spoiler stuck open'... the pilot opened...

When did the OLC rules change on submission? by
Tim Taylor
Just went to post a flight on OLC and I am too late only two days
after the flight. When did the rules change from three days to
Tuesday at midnight? If you fly on Monday or Tuesday you must submit
by midnight on Tuesday or not get scored, Very unreasonable change to
the system.

Wheel brakes by
Uncle Fuzzy[_2_]
you know what I think would be awesome? A wheel brake on a German glider that actually worked well. I know, I know, I'm way outside the box here, but it HAS been done. The G103 wheel brake, that highly sophisticated collection of motorcycle and airplane parts stops with authority. just sayin'

Wheel Brake on G102 by
Ken Pruchnick
Hi All
Our drum wheel brake on the club Grob 102 is almost useless. I was
wondering if there is a conversion to a diskbrake.

Wheel brake effectiveness standards by
Kenn Sebesta
Does anyone have any data, preferably quantitative, about what sort of braking performance is required? On the one hand, it would seem that effective braking is primordial for safe landing in the event of an outlanding, but on the other hand many gliders seem to have inadequate brakes, to put it...

Wheel brake cable? by
Movses
The brake cable on my ship needs to be replaced - stretched, adjustment barrel is already at the end of the range, etc.
The diameter of the cable is 2mm, and it seems like they don't use 2mm cables on bicycles anymore. 1.6mm brake cables are readily available, but I'm not sure if they're...

Whats the best "FREE" soaring program for the PocketPC by
Siggi Ingason
Hi,
before I put my hand in my pocket and pay for a soaring program which
I can use on my iPAQ, I'm interested in hearing what people think of free
programs like XCSoar and GPS_Log or any other soaring programs which run on
the iPAQ.
I must confess that I also have a Palm pilot Vx and think that...
