Alternative magnetic compass by
[email protected]
A sailplane's Flight Manual usually requires a magnetic compass (or an aviation compass)as minimum equipment. Well, panel space has become less available and you are seeing fewer sailplanes with panel or glare-shield mounted 2.25 Airpath C2xxx or PAI-700 aircraft specific compasses.
Anyone have a...

Avionic trailer. by
[email protected]
Thinking about new trailer and would like to know pros and cons from Avionic owners.
Since Avionic is about 40% cheaper than Cobra right now it looks like good deal....
Also if anyone owned Cobra and Avionic and can compare both models. Thank you Pavel

Silver Badge Fun (?) - real challenges? by
Nyal Williams
Location, location, location! A well-known US pilot
had the gold altitude and distance certified when he
had a total of 19hrs gliding time and had not yet
done the 5-hr flight. He is a person for whom I have
enormous respect, a natural, but he still had to have
the location at that stage of the...

Military GPS testing started yesterday on the west coast... by
Matt Herron Jr.
(per FAA Flight Advisory) You might want to factor this in to your
badge or record attempts as the GPS trace may be unusable or have
holes in it. This would be especially true at higher elevations like
wave flights. The effected area is huge, covering most of Nevada and
southern California. For...

I am looking to purchase a new (to me) XC ship. Which ones have the largest/roomiest cockpit? Not for a tall person, one with broad shoulders, about 5'9 and 200lbs. Discuss and Thank you in advance!

K8 Seats by
Mike Schumann
Our club has a K8 with extremely uncomfortable seating arraignments.
Basically we are using a combination of foam pieces and misc cushions to try
to make the glider usable. After about 2 hours, it is pure torture.
The basic glider has a metal seat pan that covers the landing wheel. The
seat...

Max Weight of Non Lift Producing Components by
[email protected]
In addition to max gross weight, some glider manuals specify a max weight for non lift producing components. But I haven't found much discussion of the significance of exceeding the max or information that would allow one to calculate the weight of non-lifting components (like a breakout showing...

That TLAR doesn't look right by
[email protected]
In the latest edition of Soaring magazine there is an article about TLAR. For those not familiar with TLAR, it is a landing approach teaching method that is based on angles as opposed to elevations and distances.
Using angles automatically compensates for variations in altitude. On downwind , if...

Towing by
Roger Fowler
I recently rode with a towpilot who leaned the engine
aggresively after retarding throttle at the start of
the descent. While he is probably correct that it
slows the rate of cylinder cooling significantly, I
had never seen it done before. Is anyone else using
this procedure?
