Breakers as Switches - Good Idea? by
Six-Seven Romeo
I often see GA and gliders that use breakers as switches. Is this such a good idea? Are breakers rated to be used as switches? These aircraft usually, but not always, have at least a master switch.
Our tow plane uses Tyco W31 series breakers which incorporate bat handles and are designed to be...

Legal? - SPOT Helium Balloon Race by
Paul Remde
Hi,
This was a crazy idea I had that my son thought would be a lot of fun. The
question is whether or not it is legal or advisable.
The idea is to tie a bunch of helium party balloons to a SPOT unit, then let
it go and see how far it gets. We would chase it down in a car.
Theoretically, we...

Inter-thermal Speed To Fly by
Ken Kochanski (KK)
Morning,
I'm reviewing some STF topics to correct some fallacies that seem to
have crept into my understanding of STF theory and application ... I
though I knew this stuff ... or maybe I forgot ... I am a senior now,
you know ... :-))
So, if I have MC set at 3 ... and I am crusing XC to the next...

Improvements in US Airspace/Airport data at www.soaringdata.info by
2KA
Hi All,
Just in time for the holiday season, I've made a couple of
improvements on my website:
- If your device's memory is too small to accommodate the airspace
map of the entire country, you can now create a subset file for just
your area of interest. Start by running a query on US...

automated flap setting by
Wallace Berry[_2_]
A prototype automated flap system was mentioned in the recent Duckhawk
discussion.
My question: Given that our manual flap settings cannot be optimal, how
much real-world improvement in climb and cruise could be gained with an
automated flap system that always has the flaps at their optimal...

I know there are electric powered sailplanes but by
YouHelpBuild.com
How about 100% electric powered ultralights?
What problems can anyone forsee to building a 100% electric ultralight
aircraft for short & mid-range commuters to get back & forth to work
(aside from air traffic issues... it IS a big sky after all)? I
understand the average commute is less than 30...

Power Flarm Problems by
Charlie Flagg
After addressing other issues with a new ship, I tackled the Power Flarm
early this summer. I read the manual, talked to folks and generated a
configuration file using the online flarm configuration tool on the
flarm.com site. After some hesitance, the configuration loaded and the
Power Flarm and...

Triple TE probes, failures by
cernauta
I have seen many (including mine!) Total Energy probes fail: hairpin
cracks in the carbonfibre tube, in the area that fits most deeply into
the plug (in the fin of the glider). The terminal pin, made of aluminum
and glued to the inside of the tube, then is not retained correctly...
and it may stay...

accident at 2005 junior worlds by

Well I totally disagree that the pilot was in anyway
responsible and am disgusted by the comments on rec.aviation,(espe
cially those from anonymous posters, gutless *******s)
if one reads the report it is obvious that the photographer
deliberately put himself in the flight path and had
to jump off...

Reducing PPG Concept Urethane by
[email protected]
I shot my first batch of PPG concept today, and it shot slower (and had more orange peel) than I expected. When I was shooting the primer, I accidentally over reduced it - and discovered that it sprayed much better. Smoother finish and faster spray.
I mixed the PPG per the instructions: 4...

Aileron / flap corner drag ? by
tango4
On an aircraft like the ventus there are several sections of control surface
along the T/E of the wing resulting in several 'breaks' in the trailing
edge. My question is - Are the breaks or corners of a deflected control
surface the source of their own little vortices and therefore additional...

Decision making in ground roll by
ProfJ
Hi Folks,
There's a lot of focus at the moment on wing dropping during the ground roll phase. I did my primary training on winch launches. For those who have never winch launched, it's quite an experience being in a 900 lb. vehicle which is accelerated by a 300hp motor which is fixed to the...

Support for SN-10 by
cernauta
Dear all
I have just bought a second hand SN-10 (A).
I had downloaded the manual a few weeks ago, where I discovered I need a
program called PCLink, and a special serial cable. Both are missing...
I searched for the websites (eglider + ilec-gmbh), but they have both
been down in the last 36...
