Trailer tow vehicle fuel pumps by Steve Leonard
From the perspective a a GM operator, my 1985 V-6 Camaro has had three fuel pumps put into it. It died once at work and kept me from going to a dentist appointment, and the other two have been at home. Vehicle currently has 287K on it, and it is still my daily driver after 20 years of my...

Barograph Blues by Steve Leonard
Sounds like a thread in the making. How about some of the best and biggest oops's. Or a few very near oops's. Here are a few. Barograph on the ground in a tent after the diamond goal /gold distance flight. Big rains that night. Barograph under water in the moring. Barograph was the old...

Most amusing un-landout by Steve Leonard
Not quite along the same lines, but still a good story. I flew out about 45 miles to the West of Sunflower (Near Hutchinson, KS) one not so great looking day. I got to an airport I had landed at the weekend before when trying to fly home from another glider field out in Western Kansas. 'Neat,' I...

Distance wood has flown by Steve Leonard
Nyal Williams worte: 'Al Parker and Ben Greene set a world distance record from either Marfa or Odessa to Kansas (I believe Salina). If memory is correct, Ben was still flying his SH-K.' I think Ben's flight was from Odessa to Great Bend, Kansas. And it was in an Austria S, not the later SHK. I...

Distance wood has flown by Steve Leonard
There is a local Ka-6 that Rudy Mozer flew 396 miles straight out from Adrian, Michigan. The Kansas State Free Distance record is held by a long winged BG-12 at 436.1 miles. My Dad built a Cherokee with a 15 meter wing (called the Annebula). He did his Diamond distance (in a flat triangle) with...

Pacific D-8 Sailplane by Steve Leonard
Well, I know where the one from the Sport Aviation ads is (N6140). Then, there is a fuselage about 45 miles from me. Then there are several others that have been built and talked about various places. Maybe they are the same one? I suspect the '3 built' is a bit low. It is not much of a...

Today's Name That Glider contest by Steve Leonard
My vote is LS-3a. On the 3, the leading edge of the horizontal is well in front of the leading edge of the horizontal. On this one, they are nearly coincident, as they are on the 3a. The wing is a single taper, with a curled down tip. I don't think it is an optical illusion. It also has the...

Tie down sleeve for Ventus 2 by Steve Leonard
I would recommend against using any fiberglass sleeve that slips over the wing as a tiedown. They will tend to pull on the control surfaces, unless you make them so that the controls can move full travel within the sleeve. And even if you do that, you will not be applying the load where it is...

Where is the Matteson M-1? by Steve Leonard
Well, my friend said 'I had it, but gave it away years ago. Not sure where it went.' So, here is what I would do. Visit: http://www.faa.gov/licenses%5Fcertificates/aircraft%5Fcertificatio n/aircraft%5Fregistry/ The link will probably not come over complete, so you will need to finish it up.

Libelle Wings by Steve Leonard
'If the comment that 'any 201 can be retrofitted with a B stamp' is really true...' I think that is implying that any 201 can have the ballast system added, and the flight manual revised to show the higher gross weight permitted with water ballast. My machine is having troubles openning...

Libelle Wings by Steve Leonard
Well, Tim is not entirely right about the Libelle wings. They ALL have a balsa shear web in the spar. Glasflugel did phase out the use of balsa as a core material in skins. To see the progression, go to: http://www.streifly.de/home-eng.html Select the tab for 'Technical Info', then follow...

how much for auto-tow gear? by Steve Leonard
Do we really need one, or would it be enough to keep a pair of cutters handy? Johan Larson I would highly discourage that approach. There can be a LOT of energy in a rope under load and cutting it may not be so easy. We use a Schweizer release on a standard 2 inch receiver.

Sailpane Hangar for 2 Sailplanes by Steve Leonard
If you haven't found it yet, Bob, it was in the February 2006 issue of SOARING. And, yes. SCOH has a similar setup for some of its hangars. Looks like it works very well. If you really want to be careful and pack the gliders in, you can go three deep in a setup like that, as in this...

Soaring Chillies Calendars by Steve Leonard
Did anyone else in the US order one? I did, and it seems the postal service between here and there has eaten both shipments. The second set was shipped about a month ago, and still nothing. I have typically gotten things quicker than this, so I fear the second set has also been lost. Anyone...

perverts in planes by Steve Leonard
I think I have the lead in this race. Those that fly biz jets and heavier stuff are familiar with big airplane stall warning devices. Most commonly, stick shakers (artificial buffet) and stick pushers (Dammit, idiot! Get the nose down!). Well, I got to be the one to design what may have...
