How About Story Time by
[email protected]
Maybe this is a good opportunity for some of us to share some stories of our experiences.
I'll go first.-
During the regional at Harris Hill in 2013 I was flying K21 with grandson Calvin Mampe, Rachel Conklin, and her sister Michelle. All 3 had flown multiple contests with me before, 2 having...

Avoiding Vne by
K.P. Termaat
Yesterday evening I talked with a friend about avoiding excessive speed when
recovering from a spin in a modern low drag glider with the somewhat larger
span.
He came up with the idea of pulling the airbrakes when still recovering from
the rotating mode. I am not sure this can be done without...

AOA indicator by
Jonathan St. Cloud
Was just reading about the Aspen suite of avionics for GA
http://www.flyingmag.com/way-to-aoa?src=PPC&dom=fb&con=Aspen-FB-Ads.
Was wondering if Air-Avionics Butterfly, LX 90XX or similar modern glide computers would be capable of such algorithms to have a working AOA?

In wave, in blue hole at cloud level, hole closes, in IMC, then what? by
son_of_flubber
So I'm flying in a blue hole in wave lift of 5 m/s, trimmed to 50 knots, in clear air with a cloud layer upwind and downwind, cloud top above and cloud base below. Suddenly I find myself in IMC. What are my options?
My glider is capable of benign spiral. I open the spoilers, (already trimmed to...

Skysight integration in XCSoar by
Bogdan Manoiu
Hi everybody,
Does anyone know if any progress had been made in the functionality to show Skysight WX on XCSoar (in a similar way to how Skysight WX can be displayed on a LX9000)?
That would make an extremely useful improvement.
Thanks,
Bogdan

Self launch ultra-light sailplane by
[email protected]
Ok, I said I'd do this for a friend who is building his own
ultralight. He wants to design and build( me helping) a sailpalne that
fits the ultralight rules and is able to launch/sustain with a power
unit, he'd prefer electric. Any ideas or comments? Is ther anything
already out there being tried?...

Flying with Parachutes by
John Huthmaker
I'm just starting out with soaring. Simple question for you guys. How many of you fly with an emergency parachute? It looks like they cost around $2000 online. Pretty steep price; although the cost is insignificant if it saves your life. Is this something I should be looking to purchase?

Crunch Alert (USA) - hugely serious but (apparently) non-fatal by
BobW
Having once 'felt the need' myself, this one undoubtedly has a compelling
story; it will definitely make its way into the NTSB database.
Thank goodness the pilot is (reportedly) OK. SSA member; diamond badge; 2-time
3rd place finisher in Region 9 Regional.
If it happens it must be possible....

Ads-b and sailplanes by
Andrew Ainslie
Has anyone been following the latest moves from the FAA on ads-b and experimental aircraft? A recent article in flying suggested that they are going to relax the requirements for experimental planes so they need a GPS source that is equivalent in performance to TSO'd units.
If this is true, it...

500 foot rule and pilot opinion poll by
John Cochrane
Fellow US pilots:
This year's SRA pilot poll will be on line in a few days. It contains
a question on the 500 foot rule. I urge you to read it, think about
it, and vote. In particular, this is a rule that benefits newer, less
experienced pilots. It doesn't matter much to the top 5 national...

ASW 20 SPIN CHARACTERISTICS by
Ventus B
I have been considering buying an ASW20, ASW20B, or ASW20C. I knew
they were champions in their day and still have a lot of admirers.
However a few folks from my club say they have some nasty spin
characteristics. Specifically, that they have a tendancy to not only
immediately spin when stalled,...
