Just pull the little red handle! by
JJ Sinclair
I lost my best friend in a mid-air last November, a Cirrus hit a tow
plane in Colorado, we had a mid-air at Parowan and now the mid-air in
Uvalde!
I'm going ballistic as in Ballistic recovery system (BRS). At my age
there's no way I'm getting out of my ship unless it's straight and
level and...

It is a topic I presented at the FAA Safety Center in Lakeland
Florida.

Mechanical Vario by
Jeff Runciman
This question was posted earlier but I was hoping for
a few more responses.
Do I put a mechanical vario or do I save space on the
panel.
Would love to hear what people have in their panel.

The SSA-OLC by
KM
I am new to the R.A.S. and I am an aspiraring contest pilot who flys XC
every chance I get,but I have never persued a badge or a contest.I read
with some interest and amusement the thread about the OLC sunset
warning. This inspired me to look up all of the OLC information on the
SSA website.I also...

Boy Who Flew With Condors - Dick Johnson? Other Comments by
ContestID67
I finally got around to watching this 1967 movie which I bought on
eBay more than a month ago. It was surprisingly well done. Not that
Walt ever put out a bad product, his production values were always top
notch. However, when the popular media shows soaring, I often see
realism and accuracy go...

Why so expensive (flight recorders) by
Jim Beckman
A simple (EW Microrecorder) is under $800. In todays
money, an extra $20 for a badge flight is less than
the round of beers you buy. 40 badge flights and you
can buy a second one. Pretty soon, you hold a club
meeting to decide what to buy next once there are
enough
recorders.
Again...

Use of weak links by
Paul[_7_]
Currently the club that I am part of don't seem to be too concerned about
the safety aspects of using the correct weak links for winch launching
and I'd like to know how safe it is.
Currently I see two issues with the winch launching:
1. Sometimes a weak link is not used at all. The gliders are...

What First Glider to own? by
Sparkorama
I'm getting back into the sport after a long hiatus and flying in the Boston area. I'll be putting some winter flying time in and I'm considering buying my first glider once I'm back to comfortable solos and my private license. (Naturally, I won't fly anything until I am competent and ready). Any...

Airbus 380 by
[email protected]
A few weeks ago there was on RAS a thread concerning the increased cost
of German gliders, due apparently to the voracious appetite of Airbus
for the raw materials: fiberglass, carbon fiber, etc...I read today
that FedEx had cancelled its order and options for a number of A380s,
and UPS was mulling...

Tony Condon Downwind Dash by
Steve Leonard[_2_]
Tony Condon is on a downwind dash from Wellington, KS. Last I heard, goal was somewhere in Texas. Cloud base should be pushing 7000 AGL, and tailwinds in excess of 30 knots. B/S ratio forecast is pretty low, but I have flown on similar sorts of days and found the lift to be very good. Will see...

Does How a (Sailplane) Pilot Thinks, Matter? by
BobW
Thought I'd start a new thread, kinda-sorta forked off one "festering" in "The
Boy Who Flew With Condors" thread (which I re-watched last night for the first
time in decades; cool!)...
On the card is a Grudge Match between two (irreconcilable?) schools of
thought. Will there be a WINNAH?!?

Vario Comparison by

Hi-
I've searched the archives of this oft-discussed topic, but am not finding specific answers I'm seeking. If you have good experience or knowledge about the specific issues below, I would much appreciate your insights.
1) Latency with accuracy. What is the quickest vario with accuracy? Are...

Truck vs Car as a tow vehicle by
Chris Behm
I am wondering how often a truck for towing a glider trailer might be an advantage? I have yet to buy my first glider, but of course and thinking that the next vehicle I purchase should be a good one to tow with (Incidentally, thinking of the GMC/Chevy Canyon/Colorado, with the 2.8L inline 4...
